Living anxiously before the danger of landslides every day
New cracks continuously appear after each heavy rain, causing many riverside households in Vinh Long to always live in anxiety. Not only worried about losing production land, people are also worried because their houses may be swept into the river at any time.
Facing the increasingly widening cracks on the Mang River dyke section passing through Tan Long Hoi commune, Mr. Nguyen Tri Phong could not hide his worry. According to him, the new landslide point appeared about 400m away from the location that occurred in early May of the lunar calendar, while the old point is still being repaired.
In recent days, a crack about 15m long has continued to appear in this area, posing a risk of subsidence. Every time it rains heavily or high tide rises, his family is worried because they do not know if the dyke will continue to erode.

We only hope that functional agencies will soon handle it thoroughly so that people can feel secure in living. Every time we hear the sound of cracked soil or prolonged heavy rain, the whole family is worried, afraid of losing land, affecting houses and property," Mr. Phong shared.
Not only Mr. Phong's family, many households living along the Mang River dyke also share the same feeling of anxiety as cracks are increasingly deeply encroaching on the mainland. Many people said they are always preparing plans to relocate assets if incidents occur.
Mr. Le Cong Hau (resident of Phuoc Hau ward) said that from June 2026, the area near Ong Thuan dam (section from Dia Chuoi bridge to Phuoc Nguon A hamlet asphalt road) experienced road surface subsidence of about 100m long, many locations subsided from 20 - 30cm, occupying about 1/3 of the road surface.
According to Mr. Hau, the incident not only caused difficulties for travel but also caused water to flood into the production area, threatening many areas of fruit orchards and posing a potential risk of traffic unsafety.
Damage exceeds 31.8 billion VND
According to the Sub-Department of Irrigation (Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province), from the beginning of 2026 to now, the whole province has recorded 107 landslide and subsidence points on riverbanks and coastlines with a total length of more than 8.9km. Natural disasters damaged 10.5ha of fruit trees, directly affecting 170 households, with a value of nearly 15.3 billion VND.
In addition to damage caused by landslides, thunderstorms and heavy rain, 1 person died due to lightning strikes, 29 houses collapsed and had their roofs blown off, damaged more than 16 hectares of rice seeds and about 200 hectares of crops, raising the total damage caused by natural disasters in the province to more than 31.8 billion VND.
In the past week alone, the whole province recorded 3 new landslide points in Hiep My commune, Nhon Phu commune and Phuoc Hau ward, with a total length of about 415m, estimated damage of nearly 990 million VND. Many large cracks have appeared in some locations, threatening works and residential areas.

Mr. Le Quang Rang - Deputy Director of Vinh Long Department of Agriculture and Environment - said that functional agencies have coordinated with local authorities to inspect the scene, stretch ropes, plant warning signs and cordon off dangerous areas immediately after the landslide occurred.
At the same time, the province continues to review high-risk points to develop long-term handling plans, and synchronously implement response solutions according to the "4 on-site" motto, in order to ensure the safety of people's lives and property and minimize damage caused by natural disasters.
Many households want landslide remediation projects to be deployed synchronously at key points soon. For them, the most important thing at this time is not only to preserve land and gardens but also to be able to live peacefully and no longer be afraid every rainy season.
