On the morning of September 16, Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) informed that up to now, 45 landslides on the Hanoi - Lao Cai railway caused by floods have been fixed. The entire route is now open to traffic, and nearly 700 tons of relief goods are being transported by trains to the flooded areas.
Due to initial repairs, at the railway points where the roadbed has been eroded and the roadbed has been washed away in Yen Bai province, the train speed is 5km/h.
Previously, the flood caused by storm No. 3 caused 15 locations of fallen trees and 20 locations of deep flooding on the Hanoi - Lao Cai railway. The floodwaters receded, leaving more than 45 landslides and erosion of the railway bed.
To ensure safety, on September 7, the railway industry stopped running passenger trains on the Hanoi - Lao Cai route.
Since September 9, heavy rains have caused floods and landslides on many railway sections through Phu Tho, Yen Bai, and Lao Cai, forcing Vietnam Railways Corporation to stop running freight trains on the route.
Yen Bai Station is one of the most flooded points on the Hanoi - Lao Cai railway line. At one point, the water level at the train control center was so high that all the equipment used to operate the train was submerged in water.
Mr. Dang Sy Manh - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) said - the purpose of opening the road as soon as possible is to transport free relief goods to support people in flooded areas.
Currently, nearly 700 tons of relief goods have been loaded onto trains from Song Than station and stations along the North-South railway line to be transported to the flooded areas of Yen Bai, Lao Cai...
"With freight trains in the Northern region running immediately after the route was opened, we combined transporting relief goods from organizations to stations along the Hanoi - Lao Cai railway line," Mr. Manh shared.
