Due to the influence of a tropical depression that is likely to strengthen into a storm, from 10pm last night to this morning, September 18, Quang Nam has had heavy rain with strong gusts of wind, with total rainfall ranging from 150 - 300mm, in some places over 350mm.
Heavy rain caused localized flooding on Hung Vuong and Huynh Thuc Khang streets in Tam Ky City; a wedding hall in Hoi An City was also flooded. Traffic and daily life of the people encountered many difficulties.
In the coastal commune of Tam Thanh, Tam Ky City, fishermen are urgently bringing their boats ashore to anchor and take shelter. Local authorities said that on September 18, it is expected that more than 100 fishing boats will be brought ashore with the support of militia and border guards to protect their property.
"The commune has also prepared plan 4 on-site to evacuate and support people in low-lying areas to safe shelters when necessary," said Mr. Truong Thanh Khoi - Chairman of Tam Thanh Commune People's Committee.
Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Le Van Dung also issued a telegram to proactively respond to the tropical depression that is likely to strengthen into a storm. He requested departments, branches and localities to focus on immediately implementing measures to ensure safety for ships, vehicles and activities at sea and along the coast.
Quang Nam Hydrometeorological Station warned that on the morning of September 19, the tropical depression will strengthen into a storm, with a level 8 intensity, gusting to level 10, and make landfall in coastal provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai, causing torrential rain with heavy to very heavy rain.
In the next 24 hours, Quang Nam sea area is likely to have tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind level 7 - 8, rough seas, waves 2 - 3m high.
According to a quick report from the Provincial Border Guard Command, as of 5 a.m. on September 18, Quang Nam had 206 fishing boats with 1,942 workers operating at sea.
The Provincial Border Guard Command has announced a call for 13 vessels operating in areas at risk of being directly affected by the tropical depression to come ashore for shelter. It is expected that today, September 18, the vessels will enter An Hoa port (Nui Thanh).
