The working delegation includes representatives of the Sub-Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Resources Surveillance, the Sub-Department of Environmental Protection, the Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Monitoring, and the Sub-Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine. In addition to taking samples for analysis, the delegation also collected information from local authorities and cage fish farming households in the area.
According to records at the scene, the Lam River area flowing through Tam Thai commune has seen abnormal cage fish deaths for a long time. The water source in the cage area shows abnormal changes, the water turns dark brown, and many sediments appear.
The number of dead fish tends to increase over time, appearing in many types of fish and many stages of development. Many households have to regularly collect dead fish to limit the risk of environmental pollution in the cage area.
According to initial inspection results, the phenomenon of fish deaths occurred at about 35 cages of households, causing significant economic damage, directly affecting aquaculture production activities, people's lives and psychology.
Mr. Lo Van Thanh, Vice Chairman of Tam Thai Commune People's Committee, said that immediately after detecting the phenomenon of abnormal fish deaths, the Commune People's Committee guided farming households to implement a number of immediate measures to limit damage and minimize the risk of environmental pollution.
Farmers are advised to proactively treat the water environment with lime and appropriate measures according to the guidance of specialized agencies; increase water circulation, supplement oxygen for farmed fish when actual conditions permit; regularly clean cages and rafts.
The locality also requires people to promptly collect dead fish, handle them to ensure environmental sanitation; do not throw fish carcasses into the river or surrounding areas; do not use dead fish as food for aquaculture, livestock, and poultry and do not consume them in any form.
Tam Thai Commune People's Committee also requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nghe An province, the Sub-Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance of Nghe An to support inspection and determine the cause of fish deaths to have handling directions.
Previously, from May 2026 to June 30, 2026, in the Lam River area flowing through Tam Thai commune, there was a phenomenon of abnormal cage-raised fish deaths in aquaculture households along the river.
In early May 2026, the situation of abnormal fish and shrimp deaths also appeared along the Lam and Dao rivers through many communes such as Anh Son, Dong Thanh, Giai Lac, Binh Minh... of Nghe An province, causing heavy damage to dozens of aquaculture households.
However, the test results of water and fish death samples at that time did not detect any abnormal signs. The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nghe An province determined that the cause of fish death may be due to heavy rains and thunderstorms causing the water environment to fluctuate suddenly on a large scale, causing shock to aquaculture.
