Mr. Huynh Binh Thai - Head of Nha Trang Bay Management Board shared: "On October 4, during the filming of the ecosystem in the Nha Trang sea area, a sea turtle was discovered. The turtles appearing like this recently shows the trend of turtles returning in large numbers and appearing more frequently."
This is a positive signal for the efforts of the Nha Trang Bay Management Board (MB) over the past 2 years in coordination with scientists and people to carry out a series of tasks in the master plan to restore Nha Trang Bay by 2030.
Of these, sea turtle conservation is one of the 16 tasks set out. From September 2022, Nha Trang City will take the lead in implementing the task of supporting the recovery and conservation of sea turtles in the Nha Trang Bay Marine Reserve and neighboring waters.
According to Mr. Huynh Binh Thai, up to now, the City People's Committee has proposed to include Dam Tre area of Hon Tre island, Vinh Nguyen ward (Nha Trang) in the general planning adjustment plan of Nha Trang city to serve as the basis for establishing a turtle nesting ground in Nha Trang Bay Conservation Area.
Currently, the authorities are implementing zoning plans to create sandbanks for turtles and are contacting Con Dao National Park to relocate suitable locations for turtles to hatch in Nha Trang Bay...
From November 2022 to June 2023, Nha Trang Bay Management Board coordinated with the Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center (Coastal Branch) to survey coral reefs in the above sea areas and monitor the Hon Chong coral reef ecosystem.
The survey shows that the coral ecosystem in this area is developing well, with an average coverage of 32.4% of the entire area. The average coverage of coral at each survey point ranges from 15.7% to 65.7%. Fish species have returned to these reef areas to live and reside.
Although the reefs have shown positive signs of recovery, reef fish have also appeared quite a lot in this sea area. However, the corals in this area are being bleached due to high sea temperatures due to climate change from May to the end of June 2024.
Along with the survey, coral restoration tasks in Hon Mun and Nha Trang Bay are being deployed simultaneously.Nha Trang Bay Management Board regularly organizes inspections and monitoring of the coral reef ecosystem, catches crown-of-thorns starfish and collects trash on the Hon Mun seabed.
In particular, since the implementation of propaganda and campaign against single-use plastics at Nha Trang Tourist Wharf, the amount of waste in Hon Mun and other areas in the Bay has decreased significantly compared to previous years. Along with the suspension of tourism activities in Hon Mun and neighboring areas, it also contributes to the restoration of the marine ecosystem in Nha Trang Bay.
