The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just assigned the Department of Construction to urgently complete the Pre-feasibility Study Report for the East-West axis construction project (Vo Van Kiet extended road), submitting it to the City People's Committee for consideration according to regulations, and the completion deadline is before February 25, 2026.
At the same time, the Department of Planning and Architecture is assigned to review and update the section from Ring Road 3 to the border of Long An province in the past; implement the direction of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in Official Dispatch No. 4814/UBND-DT dated June 27, 2025 in the drawing attached to the adjustment dossier of the Ho Chi Minh City General Plan to 2040, vision to 2060. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the Vo Van Kiet extended road has its starting point at the National Highway 1 overpass intersection on Vo Van Kiet street (formerly Binh Chanh district), and its ending point at the border of Long An province, which coincides with the starting point of project DT.823D.
The project is divided into three sections. The first section is about 2.7 km long, from the overpass of National Highway 1 to the Tan Tao - Cho Dem intersection (Vo Tran Chi street). This is a section that Ho Chi Minh City used to implement in BOT form but has not been completed and has terminated the contract with the investor.
The second section is 6.6 km long, from Tan Tao - Cho Dem road to Ring Road 3, including building a intersection connecting synchronously with this ring road.
The remaining section from Ring Road 3 HCMC to the border of Long An province before, is about 5.3 km long.
The road is 60 m wide, built according to the standard of the main urban axis, design speed of 80 km/h for motorized lanes and 60 km/h for mixed lanes.
A total of 6 river bridges will be built on the route, including: Cai Trung bridge and Hung Nhon bridge in section 1; Lang Le Bau Co bridge and Kenh A bridge in section 2; bridge over the An Ha - Xang An Ha canal and another bridge over Kenh A in section 3.
Building a complete intersection with Ring Road 3 HCMC to ensure inter-connection and synchronous traffic infrastructure in the western gateway area of the City.
The preliminary total investment of the project is nearly 19,400 billion VND. In which, site clearance costs account for a large proportion, about 12,875 billion VND; construction and installation costs are about 3,769 billion VND; the rest is for consulting, contingency and other costs.
Currently, Vo Van Kiet street is about 13 km long, 60 m wide, stretching from Calmette bridge (former District 1) to the intersection of National Highway 1 (former Binh Chanh district).
This route is an important part of the East-West Highway (Vo Van Kiet - Thu Thiem tunnel - Mai Chi Tho), put into operation in 2009, contributing to connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Southern Key Economic Region.
The research to extend Vo Van Kiet road to Tay Ninh is expected to create a strategic traffic axis, strengthen regional linkages, and promote socio-economic development between Ho Chi Minh City and the Southwest region in the coming period.
In addition to the Vo Van Kiet extended road project, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and the People's Committee of Tay Ninh province have agreed that in the period 2026 - 2030, priority will be given to investing in 8 key transportation projects to strengthen connectivity between the two localities, including:
