According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, in the first 9 months of 2024, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street (from Bach Dang to Dai Liet Si intersection, Binh Thanh District) recorded 615 traffic jams. Dinh Bo Linh - Bach Dang intersection also encountered 588 traffic jams.
Connecting routes such as Ung Van Khiem and Nguyen Gia Tri have exceeded their load capacity.
To "rescue" these routes, Mr. Nguyen Kien Giang - Deputy Head of the Department of Road Traffic Infrastructure Management (HCMC Department of Transport), said that the Department has proposed that the HCMC People's Committee prioritize the expansion of Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Dinh Bo Linh from now until 2030.
Of which, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street, 2km long from Hang Xanh to Binh Trieu Bridge, including the section of National Highway 13 passing through Mien Dong Bus Station, will be widened to 30m. At Dai Liet Si intersection, a roundabout combined with an underpass will be built, with a total investment of about 7,000 billion VND.
At the same time, Dinh Bo Linh Street will be expanded to 25m on a section of more than 2km from Pham Van Dong intersection to Dien Bien Phu, and a new Binh Trieu Bridge will be built with 6 lanes, with a total investment of 2,900 billion VND.
The Department of Transport is also researching investment to convert two routes, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Dinh Bo Linh, into elevated roads.
In addition to the main roads, the Department of Transport also proposed to build a nearly 4km long Saigon River road, connecting Ba Son Bridge (District 1) to Binh Trieu Bridge.
This project is divided into two sections: the section from Ba Son bridge to Tan Cang border (Binh Thanh) is 1.95km long, with a road surface width of 31-35m; the section from Saigon bridge to Thanh Da is 1.98km long, 35m wide.
The total investment capital is expected to be 3,380 billion VND, implemented from 2024 to 2030. When completed, the riverside route will create an important traffic axis connecting National Highway 13, reducing pressure on inner-city routes such as Ton Duc Thang, Nguyen Huu Canh, and Ung Van Khiem.
The HCMC Department of Transport also proposed to open a new section of Chu Van An Street extending from the starting point at the existing Chu Van An Street to the end point at the Dai Liet Si intersection, with a length of about 200m and a width of 25m. This project has an investment capital of more than VND560 billion, expected to be implemented in the period of 2024-2030.
When completed, this extension will help vehicles from Ung Van Khiem and Xo Viet Nghe Tinh streets easily move to Dinh Bo Linh area without having to go long way around National Highway 13 or small alleys.
While waiting for major projects to be implemented, Mr. Nguyen Kien Giang said that the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport will apply many temporary measures to reduce traffic congestion in this area.
It is expected that from November, the Department of Transport will test the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to the traffic light control system at key intersections, typically the Hang Xanh intersection and the Dai Liet Si intersection.
This technology will help analyze and regulate traffic flow in real time, increasing the ability to release vehicles through "hot" traffic spots, especially during rush hours.
