Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just approved the policy of adjusting the research scope of urban railway line No. 2 (Thu Dau Mot - Ho Chi Minh City) and urban railway line No. 3 (Tao Dan - An Ha) according to the proposal of the Urban Railway Management Board and the Department of Construction.
According to the adjustment plan, the Thu Dau Mot - Ho Chi Minh City Metro line is about 38.9km long, starting from the connection point with urban railway line No. 1 (Binh Duong New City - Suoi Tien) and ending at Tao Dan station in the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
Compared to the previous plan, this metro line is extended by about 15.6km. Previously, the line was only 23.3km long, starting from S5 station area in Phu My ward (old Thu Dau Mot City) and ending in Vinh Phu ward (old Thuan An City), connecting to Hiep Binh Phuoc depot of Metro line No. 3.

Conversely, Metro Line 3 will be shortened. The new line has a starting point at Tao Dan station and an ending point at An Ha, with a length of about 32.5km.
According to the old plan, Metro Line 3 was 45.8km long, running from An Ha (old Binh Chanh district) to Hiep Binh Phuoc depot (old Thu Duc city), passing through major traffic axes such as Kinh Duong Vuong, Hong Bang, Hung Vuong, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and National Highway 13.

This adjustment helps the Thu Dau Mot - Ho Chi Minh City Metro line take on the role of directly connecting Binh Duong with the city center. If according to the old plan, passengers from Binh Duong who want to take the metro to the center of Ho Chi Minh City must go down to the Hiep Binh Phuoc area and then switch to Metro line No. 3.
With the new plan, people can move continuously on the same metro line from Binh Duong to the central area.
Tao Dan station is also one of the underground stations of Metro Line No. 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) being implemented. When the projects are completed, this place will become an important transit point, connecting 3 metro lines of Ho Chi Minh City.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also assigned the Department of Finance to advise on adjusting the decision assigning the task of investor for the two metro projects mentioned above; at the same time, coordinate with the Urban Railway Management Board to propose supplementing the medium-term public investment capital plan for the period 2026-2030 and the annual capital plan to ensure the progress of implementation.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also requested the Department of Construction to take the lead in coordinating with relevant units to urgently complete the review report of the city's urban railway network planning in the second quarter of 2026, as a basis for updating it to the Ho Chi Minh City Master Plan to submit to competent authorities for consideration and approval.
At the same time, relevant departments and branches will summarize and advise the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to report to the Steering Committee for Development of the Urban Railway Network System on the adjustments for the Thu Dau Mot - Ho Chi Minh City Metro line and Metro Line No. 3 at the most recent meeting.
According to Resolution 09 of the Politburo, Ho Chi Minh City sets a target to put about 200km of metro into operation by 2030 and complete the urban railway network by 2045.
Currently, the city is only operating nearly 20km of Metro Line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien), which means it needs to complete about 180km more in nearly 5 years.
Key projects to be completed include Metro Line No. 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) more than 11km long, Ben Thanh - Can Gio line about 54km long and Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section about 6km long. These projects have been started or grounded.
In addition, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line, about 48km long, is expected to start construction on July 2, contributing to strengthening connectivity with Long Thanh airport.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City is also expected to start construction of three more routes including Binh Duong New City - Suoi Tien, Metro No. 6 phase 1 (Tan Son Nhat - Phu Huu airport) about 22km long and Thu Dau Mot - Ho Chi Minh City route.
