Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a decision approving the route plan and location of works along the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project, with a total length of about 53.8 km.
According to the decision, the project is researched based on the orientation of adjusting the General Plan of Ho Chi Minh City to 2040, with a vision to 2060 approved by the Prime Minister.
The railway line has its starting point at Ben Thanh station, 23/9 Park area (Ben Thanh ward), and its ending point at Can Gio Depot on a land area of about 39 hectares in Can Gio commune.
The route passes through areas including Ben Thanh, Khanh Hoi, Xom Chieu, Tan Thuan, Tan My wards and the communes of Nha Be, Binh Khanh, An Thoi Dong, Can Gio.
The route chosen passes through the buffer zone of Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, not going into the core zone to limit impact on the ecological environment.
The project is expected to arrange 2 stations in phase 1, including Ben Thanh station and Can Gio station. The Depot and OCC Operation Center are located in Can Gio commune.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned VinSpeed High-Speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company to complete the route plan dossier and project location according to regulations; at the same time, organize architectural design competitions for station buildings, railway bridges and related items to ensure technical, aesthetic, historical and urban cultural requirements.
The Urban Railway Management Board and the Department of Agriculture and Environment are assigned to coordinate in reviewing the possibility of land recovery within the project scope.
The Department of Planning and Architecture will guide relevant localities to adjust zoning plans and detailed plans at scales 1/2000 and 1/500 to serve investment deployment.
In addition, the Department of Construction is responsible for synchronously researching the expansion of Nguyen Tat Thanh street and works along the route to ensure infrastructure connection, investment efficiency and progress of the Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro project.

The Ben Thanh - Can Gio Metro line with a total investment of more than 102,430 billion VND (excluding about 13,000 billion VND of site clearance costs paid by the budget), was started on December 19, 2025.
The project is invested by VinSpeed (under Vingroup) in the form of BOO (build - own - operate).
The city is implementing compensation and site clearance work, striving to hand over in November 2026. The investor is expected to start construction in 2026 and put it into operation in 2028.
After completion, people in Ho Chi Minh City will only take about 13 minutes to travel from the city center to Can Gio.
