Southern Coastal Road
The coastal road and National Highway 50B are included in the Ho Chi Minh City Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, which has just been approved by the Prime Minister.
According to the plan, Ho Chi Minh City will develop a new southern coastal traffic axis, connecting from Tien Giang through Can Gio district (Ho Chi Minh City) to Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau.
This route is part of the southern coastal highway, about 428 km long, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta.
The route passes through the provinces of Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau. The design scale includes 4 lanes, with a speed of 80 km/h in phase 1.
The section through Ho Chi Minh City is nearly 21 km long, starting from the city's North-South axis.
In addition to the main route, Ho Chi Minh City will build a second branch connecting to Can Gio International Transit Port, located on Phu Loi Islet, Can Gio District.
The Can Gio International Transit Port project has a total investment of more than 113,000 billion VND (about 4.8 billion USD), expected to become one of the largest ports in Southeast Asia.
This additional branch continues to connect Can Gio port with Phuoc An port (Dong Nai) and Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, creating a synchronous traffic network between major seaports in the region.
The construction of the coastal route is expected to not only shorten travel time from the West to Ho Chi Minh City, but also facilitate the transportation of goods from the Mekong Delta to major export ports in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai.
National Highway 50B
National Highway 50B is a vital traffic route connecting Ho Chi Minh City through Long An to Tien Giang, playing an important role in connecting the West with the key economic region of the South.
The route starts from Pham Hung Street (HCMC) and ends at Trung Luong intersection (Tien Giang). The entire route is 55.4 km long, with a total preliminary investment of more than VND 28,600 billion.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the section through the city is about 5.8 km long, passing through Nha Be and Binh Chanh districts. The road is 40 m wide, has 6 lanes, and a total preliminary investment of nearly 5,300 billion VND.
The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has included the project in the medium-term public investment plan for the 2026-2030 period and proposed that the Central Government support 50% of the investment capital for this section, equivalent to about VND2,619 billion.
The section through Long An is 35.6 km long with an investment of about 16,208 billion VND, while the section through Tien Giang is 14 km long and requires about 7,170 billion VND.
Recently, the Ministry of Transport has proposed that the Prime Minister assign Ho Chi Minh City, Long An and Tien Giang to preside over the study of suitable investment plans, clarify the capital structure and submit them to competent authorities for approval.
In case support from the central budget is needed, the three localities will coordinate to complete the dossier to report to the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Finance for synthesis and submission to competent authorities for consideration.
