The project to build Vam Thuat bridge and upgrade and expand Vuon Lai road is on the list of 98 key traffic and technical infrastructure projects and works implemented by Ho Chi Minh City in the period 2026 - 2030.
Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board is preparing a pre-feasibility study report.
The project is expected to be approved for investment policy in the fourth quarter of 2026, started and completed in the period 2026 - 2030.

The project will directly connect Dang Thuy Tram street (Binh Loi Trung ward) with Vuon Lai street in An Phu Dong ward.
According to the preliminary scale, Vam Thuat bridge is built with a length of about 370 m, scale of 4 lanes. The project also includes about 1.8 km of the bridgehead road and Vuon Lai road, invested with a scale suitable to the plan.
The preliminary total investment is about 6,757 billion VND, using capital from the Ho Chi Minh City budget.

After completion, the project is expected to form another important traffic axis, increasing the connectivity of the An Phu Dong area with Binh Loi Trung ward and the city center areas.

Currently, travel from An Phu Dong ward to the center of Ho Chi Minh City is still limited due to the lack of direct and synchronous connection routes.
People mainly use the temporary An Phu Dong iron bridge. This is a small-scale bridge, which is often overloaded, especially during peak hours.
The bridge currently only serves motorbikes and small vehicles, while trucks and buses cannot pass through. After many years of operation, the bridge deck has appeared in some damaged and degraded locations due to having to serve a large volume of vehicles.
Notably, An Phu Dong iron bridge has experienced a number of barges and tugboats colliding, affecting the construction and causing concerns about traffic safety.
In that context, the investment in Vam Thuat bridge is expected to solve the connectivity bottleneck of the An Phu Dong area, and at the same time open up more direct traffic directions to the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
