On the evening of October 8, after a heavy rain, many roads in Binh Thanh district such as Xo Viet Nghe Tinh, Dien Bien Phu, Ung Van Khiem, Nguyen Gia Tri and Nguyen Xi were stuck in a state of prolonged traffic jams.
People have to face traffic jams for many hours, especially at major intersections such as Ung Van Khiem - Nguyen Gia Tri and the area near the old Eastern bus station.
This situation did not only occur on the evening of October 8, but this area is often congested, especially during rush hour and when there is heavy rain.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street and Dinh Bo Linh Street play an important role in connecting the northeastern gateway area of the city, where the population is dense and traffic demand is very high.
However, because the road surface has not been expanded according to the plan, the two routes are often overloaded, causing serious traffic jams.
The Department of Transport has proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee include the expansion projects of Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Dinh Bo Linh streets in the list of key transport projects that need to be prioritized for implementation in the 2024-2030 period.
The project to expand Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street (from Hang Xanh intersection to Binh Trieu Bridge) 2km long will be expanded from 16-22m to 30-40m, with a total investment of about 7,000 billion VND, of which the cost of site clearance and technical infrastructure relocation accounts for about 4,500 billion VND.
The project also includes the construction of the Martyrs' Monument interchange with a roundabout and underpass option, helping to improve traffic in the area.
The 2km-long Dinh Bo Linh Street expansion project (from Dien Bien Phu Street to Binh Trieu Bridge) will be expanded from 21m to 25m with a total investment of about VND2,900 billion.
The project also includes the construction of a new 6-lane Binh Trieu bridge, each section of which is 11.5m wide and 560m long. The cost of site clearance and relocation of technical infrastructure is estimated at about 1,400 billion VND.
A representative of the Department of Transport said that if approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, these two projects will begin investment preparation steps in the 2024-2025 period, expected to be completed before 2030.
In addition to the road expansion plan according to the planning, the Department of Transport and the Department of Planning and Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City have agreed to add an elevated road plan for the two routes Dinh Bo Linh (from Pham Van Dong intersection to Dien Bien Phu) and Xo Viet Nghe Tinh (from Hang Xanh to Binh Trieu 1 bridge).
According to the Department of Transport, the planned road expansion may not completely resolve traffic congestion in this area, as this is a vital traffic axis of the Northeast gateway and directly connects to National Highway 13.
The construction of the elevated road will help reduce the load on the two existing roads, while forming a continuous traffic axis from National Highway 13 to Dien Bien Phu Avenue, contributing to increasing investment efficiency and inter-regional traffic connections.
