HCMC proposes to expand central road 4 times, remove long-standing traffic bottlenecks

HCMC - Nguyen Tat Thanh Street will be expanded to 30 - 40m, with a scale of 6 - 8 lanes, 3 - 4 times higher than the current level to solve traffic congestion that has existed for decades.

On October 30, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee submitted to the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to consider the investment study policy for the project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and build a bridge to replace the existing Tan Thuan 1 Bridge.

According to the submission, Nguyen Tat Thanh Street (formerly District 4) is nearly 2km long, an important axis along the Saigon River, connecting the city center with the South.

Currently, the route is only 8 - 14m wide, often causing congestion due to traffic volume exceeding 140% of the designed capacity, recording more than 1,000 traffic jams each year - making this the most serious traffic jam in the city.

Tan Thuan 1 Bridge, built in 1905, is nearly 120 years old, no longer meets load standards, posing a potential risk to traffic safety.

The project will expand the section from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge to 30 - 40m, accommodating 6 - 8 lanes, synchronously connecting with key projects in the future such as Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, Metro Line 7, International passenger port and landscape space on the West bank of the Saigon River.

In addition to expanding the road surface, the city will build a Hoang Dieu underpass with a minimum scale of 4 lanes, to separate traffic and reduce conflicts at the intersection, which is always overloaded.

At the same time, it is necessary to build a new Tan Thuan 1 bridge with a modern design, ensuring load capacity, clearance of boat clearance and harmony of the urban landscape along the river.

The total estimated investment is about VND 2,950 billion, prioritized by public investment capital, which can be combined with PPP for appropriate items.

The city aims to complete investment preparation in 2026 and construction in the 2027 - 2029 period.

According to the plan, the Department of Planning and Architecture of Ho Chi Minh City will preside over the competition for architectural plans for the Saigon River West Bank area (from Ba Son Bridge to Vietnam International Container Port), and at the same time review, update and propose local adjustments to related planning projects.

The Department of Finance will advise on allocating capital to prepare for investment, while the Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board is responsible for organizing the implementation, preparing a pre-feasibility study report to submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for consideration and submission to competent authorities for approval.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to consider, give opinions and agree on the policy of assigning the City People's Committee to organize investment research for the project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and build a new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge according to the above orientation, scope and scale.

The goal is to gradually complete the connection of traffic infrastructure between the central area and the southern area of Ho Chi Minh City, as a basis for the City People's Committee to implement the next steps according to regulations.
