HCMC - Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is proposed to be expanded to 6 - 8 lanes, building a new Tan Thuan 1 bridge and Hoang Dieu underpass to end traffic congestion.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee approve the investment study policy for the project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street - a vital traffic route connecting the South with the city center to solve the congestion that has lasted for many years.

According to the proposal, the section of Nguyen Tat Thanh Street from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge (about 2.5 km long) will be upgraded and expanded from 6 to 8 lanes, ensuring smooth traffic and meeting the increasing traffic demand.

Along with that, the city will build an underpass at the intersection of Hoang Dieu Street with a minimum scale of 4 lanes, helping to reduce traffic conflicts and increase traffic capacity at the central gateway area.

Another important item is the construction of a new Tan Thuan 1 bridge to replace the existing bridge that has degraded and no longer meets traffic needs and load.

The total estimated investment for the entire project is about VND2,950 billion.

According to the Department of Construction, Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is currently nearly 2 km long, with a cross-section of only 8-14 m, while according to the plan, the road surface of this route is 30-40 m.

As a route connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with the South (formerly District 4, 7 and Nha Be District), Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is currently overloaded, often congested, especially during rush hour.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the traffic volume on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is currently exceeding the designed capacity by 140%, making it the most serious traffic jam in the city.

The Department of Construction proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee soon approve the project investment research policy in October 2025, and at the same time assign the Department of Finance to advise on the allocation of investment preparation capital and assign the Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board as the investor to carry out project preparation work.
