In the afternoon of August 19, satellite cloud images, weather radar and lightning positioning showed that convective clouds are developing, causing rain with thunderstorms and lightning in many areas in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring localities.
At the time of monitoring, some areas recorded strong convective clouds, with radar response commonly 30-43 dBZ. In which, Binh Chau area reached 43 dBZ, Xuyen Moc 42.5 dBZ, Binh Loi 39.5 dBZ; some other areas such as Cho Quan, Tan Hung, Phu Dinh, Tan Tao, Tan Nhut... recorded from about 34-37.5 dBZ.
In the next 3 hours, convective clouds will continue to develop, causing showers with thunderstorms and lightning in many wards and communes in Ho Chi Minh City such as Saigon, Ben Thanh, Da Kao, Nguyen Cu Trinh, Cau Ong Lanh, Cho Quan, Binh Tien, Tan My, Tan Hung, Phu Dinh, Dien Hong, Tan Tao, Tan Vinh Loc, Binh Loi, Tan Nhut and the Ho Tram, Xuyen Moc, Binh Chau areas. The thunderstorm area is likely to expand to neighboring areas.
Common rainfall is from 5-20mm, in some places over 30mm. During thunderstorms, people need to be wary of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind at level 5-7, equivalent to about 8-17m/s. Heavy rain in a short time can also cause localized flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the meteorological agency, the current thunderstorm pattern is a low pressure trough with an axis through the North combined with southwest monsoon operating from moderate to strong.
In the next 24-48 hours, the intertropical convergence zone with its axis through the North and North Central regions connected to the tropical depression will continue to be maintained. Southwest monsoons operate moderately to strongly, while high-altitude wind convergence will still be maintained over the Southern region. These factors continue to create conditions for thunderstorms to develop.
In the next 3-10 days, from August 22, the tropical convergence zone tends to weaken, then is likely to strengthen again around August 25-26. The Southwest monsoon continues to operate with moderate to strong intensity.
Therefore, the South in the coming days will continue to have scattered showers and thunderstorms, common rainfall of 15-30 mm, locally heavy rain over 70 mm. People need to proactively prevent localized flooding, lightning and strong gusts of wind, especially during the time when thunderstorms develop strongly.
