Ho Chi Minh City will build a 6.6 km long, 4-lane elevated road on Nguyen Huu Tho Street, from Rach Dia Bridge to near the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway intersection.

This is an important item of component project 2: Upgrading the North - South axis road, invested in the form of public-private partnership (PPP), BOT contract (build - operate - transfer).

The Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a Decision approving the Plan for the competition for the architectural design of the main overpass (elevated road) of the project.

The North-South axis road upgrade project (Nguyen Huu Tho), the section from Nguyen Van Linh to Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, is about 8 km long, with a total investment of nearly VND 9,894 billion.

Component project 2 alone has a budget of more than VND6,100 billion, of which the road surface will be widened to 60 m, accommodating 10 lanes.

Notably, more than 6.6 km of the route will be built on elevated (overpass) with a scale of 4 lanes, designed speed of 80 km/h. The total land area of the elevated route is about 49.8 hectares.

On the ground, there are parallel routes on both sides, each side has 3 lanes, with a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

There are two important intersections on the route at Nguyen Van Linh Street and Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway.

The organization of the design competition aims to find optimal, feasible and modern, unique solutions, while ensuring the technical requirements of traffic works as well as harmony with urban landscape architecture.

The admission exam format is widely deployed, without limiting the number of participating units. Companies, organizations or consortia in the fields of architecture, planning, transportation, bridges and roads with capacity and experience will be invited to implement design products for the assessment, ranking and selection of optimal solutions to submit to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for approval.

The expected time to organize the entrance exam is about 65 days after the plan is approved.

According to the plan, the work of selecting investors and signing contracts will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025. The site clearance phase is expected to be implemented from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2026.

Component projects using budget capital (compensation for site clearance, construction of two intersections) will start construction in the fourth quarter of 2025.

In particular, component project 2 under the BOT form will be implemented from the first quarter of 2026 and completed in 2028.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, when completed, this elevated route will contribute to relieving traffic congestion in the South, while synchronously connecting with major routes such as Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 2 and Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway.

Not only reducing traffic pressure, the project also plays an important role in connecting Hiep Phuoc Port Urban Area with key industrial parks of Ho Chi Minh City and the Southwest region, creating momentum to promote the city's socio-economic development.
