According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters on the evening of October 17, high tides combined with prolonged heavy rain caused some inner-city roads in Can Tho City to be severely flooded.
Particularly in the Ben Ninh Kieu area (Ninh Kieu district), the roads here are flooded, the water level rises and overflows into the shops of local households.
It was observed that the water level on the roads rose by an average of about 50cm, with some locations even being flooded about 70cm deep (depending on the location).
People struggled to control vehicles, including cars moving quite slowly, many motorbikes stalled, and bicycles struggling to get through deep water.
Businesses struggled to move goods and furniture to avoid flooding. Some households used protective measures to prevent water from entering their homes.
Sharing with Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Duc (Ninh Kieu district) said that this afternoon (October 17), the high tide rose too quickly and was higher than previous days, leaving many people unable to react in time.
“Over the past few days, I have heard that this year’s tides will be higher than previous years, but I didn’t expect them to rise so quickly today. Some stores were flooded from the front to the back, and any goods that had not yet been transported to higher ground were also soaked,” said Mr. Duc.
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Loan - running a coffee shop in the Ben Ninh Kieu area - said that the tide is rising, her shop cannot do business so her income has been affected.
Struggling to push her bicycle through deep water, Ms. Ho Bich Loan (Ninh Kieu district) said: "I was on my way home from work, but I didn't expect the flood water to be so high that I couldn't ride my bike and had to walk for an hour." Ms. Loan added that she thought the water would rise on the full moon day, but she didn't expect the water to rise so quickly this month, so she didn't have time to prepare for it.
According to the Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station, the highest peak tide level this afternoon (October 17) on the Hau River at the Can Tho Hydrological Station at 4:30 p.m. was 2.13 meters, exceeding alarm level III by 0.13 meters.
It is forecasted that the peak water level on the city's rivers and canals will continue to rise and is likely to reach its highest peak during this tide in the coming days. The peak water level will appear daily in the early morning from 6am to 8am and in the evening from 4pm to 8pm.
This is a high tide with a peak tide exceeding the level III alarm. During the days of high tide combined with heavy rain, it will cause widespread flooding in low-lying areas and inner-city riverside areas.
