The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has just approved a landscape renovation project in front of Ben Thanh Market, with a total renovation area of nearly 59,000 m2.
Of which, about 45,835 m2 is planned to be a square and a park space, divided into 4 main areas: The area around Ben Thanh market; the islet in front of Hoa Xa headquarters; the area in front of Ben Thanh Quadrangle; the 23rd September Park trainhead.
In addition, the expected area for traffic system renovation is 13,096 m2.
The square is designed in a modern direction but still preserves its historical value, with many green spaces and architectural highlights.
The walkways around the square are paved with natural granite.
At the same time, plant small leafy plants such as tamarind and sesame to create shade without obstructing the view of Ben Thanh market. Combine decorative bushes such as dan lan thanh, khe cong, hoc trang, and flowers such as chuc sao trang, ten gio Thai to create a landscape highlight.
Organize open space and large grass carpets by growing velvet grass to create a space for community activities, reduce heat absorption and increase the ability to absorb natural drainage, limit flooding during the rainy season.
The statue of Tran Nguyen Han and the statue of Quach Thi Trang, which were relocated in 2017 to serve the construction of Metro Line 1 underground station, will be restored at the square.
The project will take advantage of the drainage system that was rearranged when constructing Metro Line 1, while renovating and adding a revenue gate and access roads to increase drainage capacity.
The project has a total investment of about 145 billion VND, of which more than 120 billion VND is for construction costs, the rest is for equipment, consulting and management costs. The project will be implemented from 2025 to 2026.
According to the Department of Construction, the project will contribute to improving the quality of public space, creating architectural highlights for the city center, while improving traffic conditions and living environment.
The planning of the square connecting to Metro Station No. 1 also helps to strengthen the role of this area as an important transportation and commercial center.
