Vinh Long collected a set of martyrs' remains from information from people

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long - Searching for martyrs' remains in the 500-day and night campaign initially discovered and repatriated a set of remains in Tan Thanh Binh commune.

On July 13, Steering Committee 515 of Vinh Long province coordinated with Team K90, Political Department of Military Region 9 and local authorities to organize the search for martyrs' remains at the temporary war cemetery in Tan Hoa hamlet, Tan Thanh Binh commune.

The activity was deployed from information provided by people. Functional forces carried out clearing, surveying, zoning and digging at many locations suspected of having remains, with a spirit of urgency, caution and in accordance with procedures.

According to local people, this land used to be a temporary cemetery during the war, where dozens of martyrs were buried. After many decades, the terrain has changed, many traces are no longer intact, and the location determination is mainly based on the memories of witnesses.

Mr. Le Van Hue, former Secretary of Tan Binh commune in the period 2005-2015 (now Tan Thanh Binh commune), said that the land was once used as a temporary cemetery because it was high and dry. After 1975, many remains were collected, but there are still graves that have not been found.

From the collected information, the Military Command of Tan Thanh Binh commune advised the Party Committee and local authorities to review the area, meet with historical witnesses, and identify areas that were once temporary cemeteries to serve the repatriation work.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Le Thanh Tuan - Deputy Political Commissar of the Military Command of Tan Thanh Binh commune, the unit is implementing the 500-day and night campaign to search for and repatriate martyrs' remains, and at the same time coordinate with witnesses and veterans to provide information to accurately determine the burial location.

For many families of martyrs, the search and repatriation of remains not only reflects the morality of "When drinking water, remember the source", but also contributes to meeting the long-standing aspiration through many generations to bring sacrificed relatives back to their families.

On the morning of July 13, functional forces discovered and repatriated a set of martyrs' remains. Steering Committee 515 of Vinh Long province and related units are continuing to expand the search scope, verifying more information to serve the repatriation work in the coming time.
