Mr. Phan Van Quang - Director of Dong Duong Production and Service Cooperative (My Thuy commune, Quang Tri province) - said that this year's summer-autumn crop is a special crop when the cooperative successfully "overcomes floods".
In mid-June 2025, storm No. 1 caused heavy rain, breaking the Vinh Dinh river embankment, causing 200 hectares of the cooperative's rice fields to be completely flooded. After more than 10 days in the water, the entire rice area was damaged, if re-sowed, the crop calendar would be delayed by about 20 days - a great risk due to the risk of storms at the end of the season.
At that time, everyone was worried, because if it was late, the rice harvest could be under floodwater. But leaving the fields is not necessary, so people are determined to start over" - Mr. Quang shared.

Thanks to the support of the government and the agricultural sector, farmers have been provided with short-term rice varieties and growth stimulants to shorten the blooming time. The new crop was launched quickly, with an average yield of 5.8 tons/ha. Before storm No. 10 affected, the entire 200ha area of the cooperative had been harvested, "overcoming the storm" spectacularly.
According to Mr. Cap Xuan Ta - Chairman of My Thuy Commune People's Committee, the whole commune has 911 hectares of rice, 887 hectares were replanted after storm No. 1 and were harvested in time.
"This is the most successful storm drainage season in many years" - Mr. Ta said.

To achieve that result, local authorities and functional agencies must race against time, both to fix the landslide system and support seeds, materials, and provide technical guidance to farmers. However, Mr. Ta admitted that the dike system in My Thuy commune is currently seriously degraded. The whole commune has 5km of dykes to protect the fields, but there are up to 12 subsidence sections with a total length of 600m, many of which were swept away after storm No. 1, although they have been repaired, many sections are still deteriorating, risking to continue to fail to protect the crop when affected by storms.

Previously, Lao Dong Newspaper published articles: "Rice farmers in the Quang Tri Delta are worried about being left unused if floods come", "Dikes prevent flooding from deteriorating, overcoming ineffective patchwork", "Farmers in low-lying areas of Quang Tri are restless when the dyke is degraded" - warning about the situation of degraded dykes in low-lying areas of Quang Tri, causing the risk of crop failure when floods come. According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province, the locality has proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment include a project to upgrade 56km of dykes, renovate 50km of flood drainage axes and expand the pumping station system in the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2026-2030, with a total cost of 500 billion VND.
If the project is approved and implemented synchronously soon, farmers in low-lying areas of Quang Tri will no longer have to "bet" on the weather, but can confidently invest in safe and sustainable crops.
