Thai Nguyen - Hop Thanh commune was granted a certificate of greenhouse gas emission reduction of 44.51 tons of carbon, equivalent to an economic value of nearly 17.4 million VND.

On August 29, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Trinh Kim Thuy - Chairman of Hop Thanh Commune People's Committee said that the local government has just coordinated with relevant units to organize a summary and evaluation of the results of the smart smart rice cultivation model of alternating wet - dry rice (AWD), reducing methane emissions, aiming to build agricultural carbon credits in Thai Nguyen province.

Accordingly, in the spring crop of 2025, the smart rice cultivation model for wet - dry rice is deployed on an area of 12 hectares, in Ban Dong hamlet, with 104 participating households.

The results showed that the yield reached 6.79 tons/ha, 0.89 tons/ha higher than the opposite field. The new farming technique helps reduce 30-40% of the cost of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation water, raising the profit to 65.7 million VND/ha, 56% higher than the traditional method.

The model in Hop Thanh commune has been granted a greenhouse gas emission reduction report certificate, with a total reduction of 44.51 tons of carbon, equivalent to an economic value of nearly 17.4 million VND.

"Up to this point, the coordinating unit has not yet purchased but has donated the amount equivalent to carbon credits to the locality," said Mr. Thuy.

According to the leader of Hop Thanh commune, the program has helped gradually change the agricultural cultivation methods in the locality. In addition, there is a mechanism to treat straw, avoid burning it causing environmental pollution, but use treated products to reuse for agricultural production, reducing emissions.

The results from the pilot model in Hop Thanh commune are considered an important basis for Thai Nguyen to build a carbon credit market in agriculture, contributing to the goal of green growth and reducing net emissions by0" by 2050.

Vietnam is currently promoting the construction of a domestic carbon credit market and completing a related legal corridor. While waiting for the official market, pilot models such as SFM are a practical stepping stone to help forest owners get acquainted with the process, standards and transaction mechanism.
