The situation of erosion is developing complicatedly
Approaching the rainy and storm season, the coastal area near Bao Ninh Sea Square (Dong Hoi ward, Quang Tri province) has many serious erosion points. Instead of the gentle sandy strip that extends to the sea, there are vertical sand cliffs, in some places several meters high. Sea waves continuously burrow into the sandbed, eating deep into the mainland.

Recorded by Lao Dong Newspaper reporters along Bao Ninh beach, the concrete drainage culvert from Vo Nguyen Giap street connecting to the sea was exposed after sand was drawn into the sea. Due to the lack of protective sand layer, the structure was broken and broken into many pieces by waves, lying scattered on the water's edge.

A section of the bank more than a kilometer long is deeply hollowed out, the sandy slope is vertical, many sections have been covered with wild plants. Right at the location where many people swim, a sink deep into the mainland. According to local people, a rescue hut was completely "swallowed" by erosion at the end of May 2026, currently only concrete slabs are protruding from the sand.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Ha (resident of Bao Ninh 1 residential group, Dong Hoi ward) said that in the past, siltation still occurred according to natural laws, but in the past two years, it has become much more unusual.

In the past, the sand beach was very wide and gentle, walking to the sea was very far. Now, after only a few big waves, the sea has eroded deep into the shore, forming vertical sand cliffs. We hope that functional agencies will soon study solutions to preserve this beautiful beach, because seeing the sea encroaching on us every day makes everyone feel sorry," Mr. Ha shared.
Need urgent solutions before the rainy and storm season
Attached to Bao Ninh beach since 2009, Mr. Lai Minh Tu (66 years old, member of Bao Ninh beach rescue team) said that no year has the erosion situation been as fast and complicated as from the end of 2025 to now.

Previously, this area had casuarina forests holding sand, so when the storm came, there was no erosion like now. Currently, waves hit the shore directly, sand is swept away very quickly. What I am most worried about is that if this year the storm is big, the sea will erode even deeper, possibly knocking down even coastal power poles," Mr. Tu said.
According to Mr. Tu, although the coastline is cut into high sand slopes, the beach is still flat and the slope is safe. The rescue team is on duty every day, regularly warning at locations with currents, so people and tourists can still swim safely.

Bao Ninh is still a very beautiful beach, the water is clear, and there are still many visitors every day. The unfortunate thing is that the sand is gradually disappearing. If there are no fundamental solutions, it will greatly affect the landscape and tourism in a few years," Mr. Tu worried.

Discussing this issue, Mr. Dang Ngoc Hung - Director of Dong Hoi Ward General Service Center said that the erosion phenomenon has been continuously taking place since 2023 and is becoming increasingly serious. In the immediate future, the unit is focusing on relocating kiosks and works at risk of landslides deep inside, and is ready to dismantle items such as power poles if the sea continues to encroach.
According to Mr. Hung, with the current scale of encroachment, localities cannot handle it themselves but need the involvement of ministries, sectors, and scientists to research appropriate technical solutions, and at the same time allocate resources to protect Bao Ninh beach in the long term.
