Date 10.8, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri Province confirmed that foot-and-mouth disease has appeared in the mountainous district of Quang Tri Province. The disease has a complex development, so it has requested relevant units to implement measures to prevent and control the disease.
According to the data from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, from the end of June 2024 to the present, foot-and-mouth disease has occurred in the mountainous district of Huong Hoa in Huong Phung and Huc communes. There are 27 cattle infected with the disease, 1 died, and the number of infected livestock developed the disease after being introduced to the area from 1 to 3 days.
Specifically, in Huong Phung commune, the disease occurred at the end of June 2024, but the locality was slow to report and handle the outbreak according to regulations. To date, all infected cattle have recovered from clinical symptoms.
At Huc commune, the cattle were introduced to the area on July 29, and developed the disease on July 31. On August 1, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development directed the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department to inspect, take samples of infected cattle from Mrs. Ho Thi Ta Pung's household (Ta Cu village, Huc commune) and send them for testing, which showed a positive result for foot-and-mouth disease type O virus.
Currently, infected livestock are still being discovered in villages where cattle have been introduced to the area in Huc commune.
Foot-and-mouth disease has a fast-spreading nature, while the local cattle herd has not been vaccinated against the disease. In addition, many communes in Huong Hoa district are implementing animal breeding programs from various projects, so the risk of disease outbreaks and spread is very high in the coming time.
To encircle and control the disease, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri Province has requested the People's Committee of Huong Hoa district to direct localities to concentrate resources, quickly eliminate the outbreak. Isolate infected livestock completely, disinfect and decontaminate the outbreak area to prevent the disease from spreading; organize vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease to encircle the outbreak area.
Especially, temporarily suspend the export, import, and breeding of susceptible livestock to foot-and-mouth disease such as cattle, buffalo, goats, and pigs until further notice from specialized agencies.
