Waste treatment plant owes workers 1.78 billion VND in wages

HOÀI THANH |

Bao Loc Waste Treatment Plant has just temporarily stopped operations and owes 1.78 billion VND in wages to its workers. According to a representative of the Lam Dong Provincial Labor Federation, a company not paying wages and social insurance is a violation of the law.

Employee salary arrears

According to information from the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Bao Loc city, the unit has just had a meeting with Friendly Green Environment Joint Stock Company (the unit investing and operating Bao Loc Waste Treatment Plant). The meeting content is to resolve the recommendations of the collective of workers regarding the long-term debt of wages and social insurance.

The meeting also had representatives of Lam Dong Provincial Labor Federation, Bao Loc City Labor Federation, Bao Loc City Social Insurance and representatives of employees who were owed wages and social insurance.

According to the authorities, the company currently owes 70 employees (including those who have quit) VND 1.78 billion in wages. The debt period is calculated from December 2023 to the end of July 2024.

In addition to salary arrears, as of the end of August 2024, the above enterprise also owed 78.4 million VND in social insurance for 12 employees.

Mr. Le Viet Hung - member of the Board of Directors of Friendly Green Environment Joint Stock Company - said that the revenue from waste treatment from the beginning of 2024 to August was 8.2 billion VND; however, the company has used it all. The company is waiting for payment from the Urban Management Department of Bao Loc City to pay salaries to employees.

Mr. Nguyen Cao Thang, a worker at Bao Loc City Waste Treatment Plant - representative of the labor collective said: "We all have very difficult lives. I request the authorities to intervene promptly so that the company can soon pay the workers' unpaid wages."

It is worth mentioning that from 4:00 p.m. on September 11, 2024, Bao Loc Waste Treatment Plant began to temporarily suspend waste incineration activities. According to the Plant representative, the temporary suspension of waste incineration was due to lack of funds to purchase raw materials to run the furnace. However, waste reception activities are still taking place.

However, in the next 2 to 3 days, if the factory does not resume operations and there is no more space to collect waste, the risk of a backlog of household waste in Bao Loc city is very likely to occur.

Violation of the law

According to the representative of the Lam Dong Provincial Labor Federation, the fact that Friendly Green Environment Joint Stock Company (the investor and operator of Bao Loc Waste Treatment Plant, Bao Loc City, Lam Dong) owes wages and social insurance to its employees is a violation of the law. The representative of the Lam Dong Provincial Labor Federation requested the company to quickly pay the money it owes to its employees; create conditions for the establishment of a grassroots Trade Union to protect the rights of employees.

According to the authorities, the above company owes 70 employees (including those who have quit) 1.78 billion VND in wages and 78.4 million VND in social insurance for 12 employees.

Regarding this issue, the representative of Bao Loc City Social Insurance requested the company to review and make a list of social insurance, health insurance, and unemployment insurance contributions for all employees; and pay the social insurance debt of 12 employees before September 30.

Explaining the issue of unpaid wages to employees, Mr. Le Viet Hung - a member of the Board of Directors of Friendly Green Environment Joint Stock Company said that he is waiting for payment from the Urban Management Department of Bao Loc City to pay.

According to the Bao Loc City Urban Management Department, from the beginning of 2024 to the end of August, the unit has paid the company 9 times for waste treatment with the amount of VND 8,696 billion. Therefore, the lack of money to pay salaries to employees is an internal matter of Friendly Green Environment Joint Stock Company.
