This is not a surprising result in the current context, but it was once considered "unimaginable" in the early days of BEVs and PHEVs. At that time, most users chose small sedans and hatchbacks because of their convenience and usefulness.
According to statistics, there are many BEV and PHEV lines with a variety of vehicles from SUVs to pickup trucks. Of which, total BEV sales in 2023: small SUVs account for 40.4% of the market share, followed by mid-size cars with 21.2%, then standard SUVs with 12.2%, small wagons with 11.7% and finally large cars with 8.3%.
Users also have high expectations for a significant increase in electric pickup truck sales in 2024 when many models such as Tesla Cybertruck; Chevrolet; GMC are being sold in large numbers. Along with that, cheap electric pickup truck versions are gradually entering the market or will be launched soon.
According to the DOE, the weight of SUVs in the regulated segments is as follows: a compact SUV weighs less than 6,000 pounds; a standard-sized SUV weighs from 6,000 to 9,000 pounds.
The Tesla Model Y belongs to the small SUV segment and is currently the model that contributes the most to BEV sales in this segment. However, many new models such as: Chevrolet Equinox; Chevrolet Blazer; Honda Prologue are also capturing a large market share.
