Hyundai has revealed a hydrogen-powered successor to the Nexo due in the first half of 2025. The upcoming Hyundai Initium will feature an FCEV powertrain, promising a range of more than 650km (404 miles).
The exterior of this SUV combines elements from the all-electric Ioniq 5 and the ICE-powered Santa Fe. Highlights include: boxy LED lights; sturdy C-pillars; tilted rear glass... Aerodynamically optimized 21-inch wheels, covered by extended fenders.
Recently revealed photos show that this new version will have smaller wheels, common roof rails and a simpler lighting system.
Hyundai has not revealed the interior details of the new model, but the company promises a spacious cabin designed for families. Second-row passengers will have more space and recline angle. In addition, large rear doors will improve access.
On the safety front, the SUV will feature nine airbags and a sturdy chassis with a “multi-frame structure” at the front and additional reinforcements on the sides.
The Hyundai Initium is powered by a 201 hp (150 kW/204 PS) electric motor with a large hydrogen tank that allows for a range of over 650 km (404 miles). The Nexo, on the other hand, has a 161 hp (120 kW/162 PS) output and an EPA range of 612 km (380 miles).
The improved figures are achieved by increasing the output of the fuel cell stack and increasing the battery capacity, according to the company. Initium can also use the fuel cell to power household appliances and personal devices through V2L functionality.
Ahead of its launch, Hyundai will showcase the model at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the United States and the Guangzhou Auto Show in China, scheduled to take place in November.
