Hybrid cars find a place between gasoline and electric cars

Thanh Vũ |

Hybrid cars are being supplemented with more options in Vietnam, but this technology must find its own place between traditional gasoline cars and pure electric cars.

The Vietnamese automobile market is entering a new competitive phase as electric car lines are becoming more diverse. Besides pure electric cars, hybrid cars continue to be included in the product portfolio by manufacturers, targeting customers who want to reduce fuel consumption but are not ready to completely switch to electric cars.

In recent days, Hyundai has organized experience activities for two models, Tucson Hybrid and Palisade Hybrid, in Vietnam. This is another sign that manufacturers are expanding hybrid choices in many segments.

After 7 months of 2026, Vietnam's auto market reached 221, 540 vehicles, an increase of 14% compared to the same period last year. The recovery of the auto market along with the trend of electrification is creating more room for new power technology.

What are the advantages of hybrid?

Hybrid cars combine internal combustion engines with electric motors and battery packs. With self-charged hybrid models, users do not have to rely entirely on charging station systems like pure electric cars.

This is a notable advantage in Vietnam, where charging infrastructure is continuing to expand but is not evenly distributed across regions. Hybrid car users can still refuel like internal combustion engine cars, while utilizing electric motors in many operating conditions to reduce fuel consumption.

For those who are not ready to switch to electric vehicles, hybrids can be seen as an intermediate option. Buyers do not have to change too many usage habits, while still being able to benefit from the fuel economy of the electrification system.

However, this advantage also raises a question: is hybrid attractive enough to compete when electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular?

Pure electric vehicles have advantages in energy costs and do not generate direct emissions during operation. Meanwhile, hybrids still use gasoline engines and need maintenance of both the internal combustion engine system and the electrical system.

Therefore, buyers should not only look at the announced fuel consumption level. The initial selling price, actual savings, maintenance costs, battery life and electric motor all need to be calculated in the total usage cost.

The competition will be clearer

The fact that manufacturers continue to bring more hybrid cars into the market shows that this technology still has a position in the process of car electrification in Vietnam.

Tucson Hybrid and Palisade Hybrid are two examples in different segments. According to previously announced information, Tucson Hybrid is expected to be priced under 999 million VND, while Palisade Hybrid belongs to the higher price group.

The appearance of more car models helps consumers have more choices. Instead of just considering between gasoline cars and electric cars, customers have an additional option to combine two technologies.

However, hybrids also do not have an absolute advantage. If the purchase price is significantly higher than the equivalent internal combustion engine version, users will have to calculate the necessary time for fuel savings to compensate for the difference. Meanwhile, if electric car prices continue to compete, hybrids must also prove the benefits are large enough to convince buyers.

Another factor is consumer psychology. Hybrid cars may be suitable for people who travel long distances frequently, do not have convenient charging conditions, or want to reduce fuel consumption without completely changing the way they use the car.

Conversely, for people who mainly travel in urban areas, have stable charging conditions and prioritize operating costs, pure electric vehicles can become a direct competitive choice.

Therefore, the race between electric vehicles in the near future will not only depend on technology. Selling price, infrastructure, usage cost, battery system durability and ability to meet actual needs will determine consumer choice.

Hybrid can play a bridging role in the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. But for strong development, this technology needs to prove its effectiveness in practice, instead of being seen only as an intermediate solution.

As more and more electric and hybrid car models appear, the immediate beneficiaries are consumers with more choices. At the same time, competition also forces manufacturers to offer products with more reasonable selling prices and ownership costs.
