The German brand previously teased the idea of an electric 718 with the Mission R concept racer in 2021, but the only EV prototypes spotted in the past three years have been the Boxster version. Now, a Cayman EV has been spotted testing.
Despite being an electric vehicle, the design of the 718 Cayman EV still retains the familiar features of the current 718 line.
The car has a similar appearance to the Cayman 982 ICE from 2016, with a sporty roof and an active spoiler that retracts when the car is moving, but automatically extends to enhance aerodynamics when needed.
Another distinctive feature is the third brake light, placed vertically above the hatch, reminiscent of the signature design of the Porsche 911.
The rear of the Cayman EV is impressive with LED lights running across the entire rear of the car. The rear window is V-shaped, higher than the camouflage, creating a strong and sporty feeling.
Other details of the Cayman EV are similar to the Boxster versions Porsche has been testing in recent years. The front end retains a design largely similar to the Boxsters from 2022, with faux horizontal bars on the front bumper to distract from details like the active rear spoiler.
Porsche is planning to develop both a Boxster and Cayman EV, with a choice of single or dual motors. The models are expected to be unveiled this year and go on sale in 2026.
However, according to recent reports, Porsche may have some difficulty in adjusting the performance of its new EVs to match the driving performance of its current internal combustion engine (ICE) models.
This could potentially lead to a delay in the launch of these models in the near future.
