On the afternoon of September 25, Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital informed that recently, the emergency department received pregnant woman N.T.M.L (34 years old, Vinh Thanh commune, Chau Thanh district, An Giang province), second child, 40 weeks pregnant, transferred from An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.
Can Tho City Obstetrics Hospital added that the pregnant woman was transferred with symptoms of headache, blurred vision, epigastric pain, spontaneous bleeding from the gums, dark red urine and high blood pressure that had to be controlled with continuous medication.
Upon receiving the news, the team quickly provided emergency care and conducted an inter-hospital consultation with Can Tho General Hospital and Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital. After the consultation, the patient had a blood clotting disorder, increased liver enzymes, severe thrombocytopenia, spontaneous bleeding, fetal distress, severe preeclampsia, and HELLP syndrome.
Dr. Huynh Thanh Liem, head of the team, directed the rapid stabilization of the pregnant woman and performed an emergency cesarean section, while performing resuscitation and platelet transfusion to treat blood clotting disorders during surgery.
After a period of emergency efforts, the newborn baby was born weighing 2.3 kg and was examined and closely monitored by the doctor. In addition, the mother continued to be actively resuscitated with a total of 6 units of platelets and 4 units of fresh frozen plasma. Currently, the mother's blood pressure has stabilized, the headache has gone away and the blood clotting has stabilized again.
According to Dr. Huynh Thanh Liem - Deputy Director of Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, if HELLP syndrome in pregnant women is not treated promptly, the disease will quickly become severe and threaten the lives of both mother and child.
“The most common early symptoms are leg swelling and high blood pressure. These signs can be detected during prenatal checkups. Therefore, pregnant women should have regular prenatal checkups to be examined and consulted by a specialist, and to detect preeclampsia early, thereby providing timely intervention measures to help protect the health of both mother and child,” said Dr. Huynh Thanh Liem.
