Help patients recover after surgery or injury
From January 18-25, 2025, the European Society of Regional Anesthesia and Analgesia (ESRA) in collaboration with the world's leading professional associations launched the second World Week of Regional Anesthesia and Analgesia with the theme "Joining hands for a pain-free future worldwide".
This event is an opportunity for leading physicians and experts in the field of anesthesia and resuscitation from around the world to update their knowledge, share experiences and discuss remarkable advances in regional anesthesia and pain relief techniques.
In Vietnam, the program was held online via Zoom platform and in person at two locations: Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi and Thai Nguyen Central Hospital on January 25, 2025.

Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh - Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi - said that currently, the field of regional anesthesia and pain relief in Vietnam is receiving attention. The development of regional anesthesia and pain relief is ideal for patients, minimizing surgeries requiring general anesthesia.
"Nowadays, there are painless surgeries or patients are completely awake during surgery. Regional anesthesia reduces risks in general anesthesia or in medical facilities that are not qualified to perform general anesthesia...", said Prof. Dr. Le Ngoc Thanh.
Regional anesthesia and pain relief also help patients recover from surgery or trauma without pain, or help cancer patients overcome unnecessary pain... with the goal of allowing all patients, including primary care patients, to benefit from the best techniques.

Reduce treatment costs and shorten hospital stays
Associate Professor, Dr. Cong Quyet Thang - President of the Vietnam Association of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation - said that every patient scheduled for surgery must go through pain.
"Pain can affect psychology and many functions in the body, leaving very long-term consequences. Therefore, regional anesthesia and good pain relief for patients are very important," Associate Professor Thang affirmed.
According to Associate Professor Thang, many hospitals have now stepped up the development of comprehensive pain relief programs, from acute pain treatment during surgery to chronic pain management. New techniques are applied not only to reduce pain but also to improve the quality of life for patients.
In the coming time, the association will focus on training, updating knowledge and new technology, improving qualifications and skills in regional anesthesia and pain relief for doctors in Vietnam, thereby helping to provide comprehensive health care for patients.

Associate Professor, Dr. Cong Quyet Thang also said that the Vietnam Association of Anesthesia and Resuscitation is coordinating with the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, the Department of Science, Technology and Training, and the Ministry of Health to promote the development of technical processes and related technical catalogs... towards the goal of comprehensive care, ensuring patients are painless, safe, reducing treatment costs and shortening hospital stays.
