On August 20, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just successfully deployed a combined laparoscopic surgery "two in one", including complete hysterectomy and radical rectal resection, and at the same time taking specimens through the natural route using NOSES technique.
The patient was admitted to the hospital about a week after experiencing dull pain in the lower abdomen, loose stools accompanied by dark red blood.
Through rectal endoscopy, biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging and pelvic microscopy, doctors determined that the patient had a mid-stage rectal tumor cT2N0M0. The pathology results showed moderate differentiated linear carcinoma.
Notably, the simultaneous examination process revealed that the patient's uterus increased in size by about 10x8cm, with many fibrous nodules and cervical Naboth cysts. Thus, the patient needs to be treated simultaneously with rectal cancer and uterine pathology.
After consultation with many specialists, doctors agreed to perform two surgeries in one surgery to limit the patient having to undergo multiple anesthesias and surgeries.
The surgery was directly directed and performed by Dr. Truong Vinh Quy - Deputy Director of Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital, along with specialized teams.
During the surgery, the doctors performed an endoscopy to remove the entire uterus first. After separation and safe control, the uterus was removed through the vagina.
The team continued to perform endoscopy to remove a rectal segment with a tumor according to the principle of cancer surgery, dissected regional lymph nodes and removed the specimen through the vagina using NOSES technique. After that, doctors performed colon reattachment with an anal tube.
According to the hospital, taking specimens through the natural route helps further limit incisions on the abdominal wall, reduce the level of invasion and contribute to reducing post-operative pain.
After about 2.5 hours, the surgery ended safely. The patient continued to be monitored, received post-operative care and functional rehabilitation.
Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that combining treatment of two diseases in the same surgery requires close coordination between many specialties, while ensuring the principle of cancer surgery and safety for patients.
