On February 5, Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that the unit had just successfully treated a patient with severe necrosis in the neck and chest area, originating from complications of a tooth decay.
The patient is Mr. N.D. K. (43 years old, residing in Trieu Phong commune, Quang Tri province), admitted to the hospital in a state of swollen, red, painful neck and right chest, oozing a lot of pus with a foul odor. Previously, Mr. K. had tooth pain but was subjective and did not treat it, causing widespread infection.
On January 2nd, the patient was admitted to the General Surgery Department in a state of severe infection. Ultrasound and CT scan results showed a pool of fluid and gas spreading from the lower right jaw area, connected to the root of the R48 teeth, extending down to the neck, epiclavix and right chest wall, accompanied by pleural fluid on both sides.
Faced with the complicated developments, doctors of the General Surgery Department coordinated with specialists in Dentistry, Maxillofacial, Otolaryngology and Oncology to conduct consultations and agree on a multi-specialized treatment plan. In which, R48 teeth, the main cause of infection, were removed; necrotic tissue areas in the neck and chest were cut, cleaned, and the infection site was controlled.
After many consecutive surgeries, the entire necrotic skin area was thoroughly treated. Doctors continued to perform skin grafts taken from the right thigh to regenerate the chest area, sew back the neck area, gradually helping the patient stabilize and restore function.
After more than a month of intensive treatment, the patient's condition is currently stable and is continuing to be monitored and cared for for recovery. The hospital said that this is a complex case, requiring close coordination between many specialties and close monitoring for a long time.
From this case, doctors recommend that people not be subjective about oral diseases. When there are signs of tooth decay, dental inflammation, and prolonged pain, they need to go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment, to avoid dangerous complications that threaten health and life.
