Ms. NHN (living in Ho Chi Minh City) had gastric bypass surgery after her weight reached 93kg. According to Ms. N, she had previously tried all weight loss methods, including using functional foods and working out with a personal trainer. However, after losing weight, her weight quickly increased again. Finally, she decided to have gastric bypass surgery to lose weight.
“After nearly a year of surgery, my current weight is 59kg, my health is stable, I feel happier and more comfortable. At the same time, the doctor still requires a full diet with necessary nutrients. However, the food portions are smaller and I feel full quickly," Ms. N. shared.
Dr. Vo Duy Long - Deputy Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, said that for people who are obese or overweight from a medical perspective, patients will have to be treated medically first by adjusting their diet. When the energy taken into the body needs to be consumed, moderation in diet and exercise is very important.
Regarding surgical intervention, the latest method is currently gastric bypass, which aims to remove part of the stomach area and reduce gastric secretion to limit appetite, while helping obese people feel full faster.
“Gastric bypass surgery is a major surgery, the indication must be based on factors such as: BMI >37; or people with BMI from 32-37 who have been treated with diet and exercise for a long time (1-2 years) but have not improved... these cases will be considered for surgery. For people with BMI <32, it is advised not to rush surgery, because once the stomach has shrunk, it cannot return to its original state, and all surgeries have the risk of complications. For example, people after surgery may have eating disorders, micronutrient disorders, calcium and vitamin deficiencies...", Dr. Duy Long emphasized.
After gastric bypass surgery, it is necessary to have a nutritious diet and maintain an exercise routine to lose weight slowly and safely. Some cases absolutely should not have gastric bypass surgery, such as people with a BMI >45, because these people have a high risk of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, liver... They need to lose weight to an appropriate level before surgery can be performed.
