From organ donation decision to journey to save three patients

Amidst the pain of losing a loved one, a family's decision to donate organs has opened up opportunities for life and light for three patients.

After the serious incident, Mr. Le Van Duy (character name has been changed) was transferred to Thanh Nhan Hospital in critical condition. Doctors mobilized maximum manpower and vehicles, and simultaneously implemented many active resuscitation measures with the hope of regaining the patient's life. Many teams continuously raced against time, but due to severe brain damage, all professional efforts could not change the course of the disease. The patient was diagnosed brain death according to professional regulations.

When the doctor announced the conclusion, the atmosphere in the room fell silent. That was the most painful moment for the family, and also the time when the doctors had to accept that they no longer had the ability to keep the patient.

After the family gradually stabilized their spirit, doctors at Thanh Nhan Hospital shared about the meaning of donating tissues and organs after brain death; about patients waiting every day for the opportunity to have organ transplants and the humanistic value of giving life.

As the family representative who signed the organ donation petition, Mr. Khanh said: "I regularly go to pagodas and participate in charity activities, so I always believe that giving is a meaningful act. When I knew that my father no longer had a chance to recover, I thought if my father could help others, that would be the best thing he could leave for his life. Everyone will have to leave. But if I know how to give, a part of me will last forever. I believe my father will be more at peace knowing that from his departure, more people have been able to live.

Immediately after the family agreed to donate tissues and organs, Thanh Nhan Hospital immediately activated the coordination process. Dozens of doctors, nurses and technicians from many specialties urgently coordinated to resuscitate and preserve organs, assess the function of donated organs and prepare for organ extraction.

At the same time, the hospital closely coordinated with the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation. After the evaluation and coordination process, Mr. Duy's liver was transplanted to a patient at Central Military Hospital 108. The two corneas were transferred to the Central Eye Hospital, bringing a chance to regain light for two other patients.

According to Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Director of Thanh Nhan Hospital, each case of organ and tissue donation after brain death is a special journey, where medicine and compassion meet.

Doctors always do everything to save patients until the last moment. When life can no longer be held, what we can do is accompany the family so that part of that life can continue in the bodies of others. Every decision to donate tissues and organs after brain death is an extremely noble gesture, not only saving many patients but also spreading profound human values in the community," Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong shared.
