On the evening of July 19, Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital said that the unit had performed multi-organ transplantation from a 22-year-old brain-dead donor in the early morning of July 18. Among them, 4 patients were successfully transplanted organs, including 1 liver transplant, 1 heart transplant and 2 kidney transplants.
The organ donor suffered underlying spider hemorrhage due to ruptured internal carotid artery aneurysm in the left. After first aid, resuscitation and endotracheal intubation at People's Hospital 115, the patient was transferred to Nam Saigon Hospital.
Although the recovery opportunity is slim, the family asked to transfer the patient to the University Medical Center Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment. Here, the family expressed their desire to donate tissues and organs to save other patients if treatment is unsuccessful.
After a period of intensive treatment, the patient's condition did not improve and was diagnosed with brain death according to professional procedures and legal regulations. Implementing the family's wishes, Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital reported to the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center to carry out the coordination and distribution of donated organs according to regulations.
Immediately after receiving the coordination plan, the hospital organized a meeting, then synchronously deployed personnel assignment, prepared resources and organized the collection and transplantation of multiple organs at the same time.
On July 18, many operating rooms at the hospital were lit up. Liver was transplanted to a 61-year-old female patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. 2 kidneys were transplanted to two female patients, 53 years old and 48 years old, both suffering from end-stage kidney failure.
The heart was transplanted to a 25-year-old male patient with dilated cardiomyopathy, end-stage heart failure, who had been hospitalized many times and waited for emergency heart transplants for the past 2 months in critical condition. At the same time, the unit coordinated and supported the team of the Central Lung Hospital and E Hospital to take, preserve donated lungs and transport organs by air to Hanoi.
This is the 4th time the University Medical Center Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City has activated the multi-organ extraction and transplant process. The unit expects patients after transplantation to recover smoothly and achieve good treatment results. The hospital respectfully expresses its deep gratitude to the organ donor and his family.
