The two projects of dredging and improving the environment combined with urban embellishment at Ong Be canal and Ba Lon canal have just been included by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in the content submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council for approval of the investment policy at the meeting in early November.
The dredging and environmental improvement project combined with urban renovation of the drainage axis of Ong Be canal (Chanh Hung ward and Binh Hung commune) has a total investment of more than VND 7,434 billion.
The project includes main items such as dredging the Ong Be canal about 4.2 km long; building a 5.6 km long embankment protection system; and forming a new route according to the plan, 12 - 16 m wide, more than 2.4 km long.
Along the embankment, synchronous technical infrastructure such as sidewalks, railings, drainage systems, up and down wharves, trees and lighting will be invested in.
To implement the project, Ho Chi Minh City will reclaim land from 1,425 households in Chanh Hung ward, of which 1,224 households must be cleared and 201 households are partially affected.
The goal of the project is to increase drainage capacity, reduce flooding for an area of 470 hectares, while improving the environment, beautifying urban areas along canals, creating ecological space and momentum for socio-economic development in the South of Ho Chi Minh City.
The project also plays a role in supporting drainage for the Doi Canal and coordinating with the project "Solving flooding caused by tides in Ho Chi Minh City area taking into account climate change factors - phase 1" (total capital of nearly 10,000 billion VND), contributing to reducing flooding in the city center.

The dredging and environmental improvement project combined with urban renovation of the Ba Lon canal drainage axis (Binh Dong ward and Binh Hung commune) has a total investment of more than VND 9,228 billion.
According to the compensation plan, the project will reclaim land from 378 households, of which 283 households must be cleared and 95 households are partially affected.
Ba Lon canal will be dredged, embankment built and the entire route will be renovated with a length of about 7.4 km. At the same time, the project will form traffic routes according to the plan, complete the technical infrastructure system and build a new Ba Lon 2 bridge across National Highway 50.
The project aims to solve the drainage needs for an area of about 920 hectares, while limiting landslides, improving the water environment and contributing to urban beautification. The project also plays a role in supporting the drainage of rainwater for the 10,000 billion VND tidal prevention project, helping to reduce flooding in the city center.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has 398 unnamed rivers, canals, and ditches, with about 39,600 houses that need to be relocated.
According to the Resolution of the 1st Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress, for the 2025-2030 term, the city aims to relocate 50% of houses on and along canals by the end of 2030, equivalent to about 20,000 apartments. Of which, District 8 alone (formerly) occupied more than 15,000 apartments.
In the 2020 - 2025 term, Ho Chi Minh City aims to relocate 6,500 houses along canals, and it is expected that by the end of 2025, the relocation of 5,548 houses will be completed, reaching about 85.35%.
