PSG confirmed that it has successfully recruited Filipino-born player Dro Fernandez on a contract valid until the summer of 2030.
Notably, although Dro's contract release clause at Barcelona was only 7.1 million USD, PSG still agreed to spend up to 9.7 million USD to own this young star.
According to experts, this is a calculated move by the French team. Paying higher not only helps President Nasser Al-Khelaifi "cool down" relations with Barcelona, but is also said to help PSG optimize income tax and social security according to regulations in France.
Thanks to that, PSG can reduce costs for players to activate release clauses themselves, while Barca earns higher than expected money.
Dro Fernandez was born in Spain, with a native father and a Filipino mother. Joining La Masia from the age of 14, Dro was once considered the future of Barcelona. Coach Hansi Flick was particularly generous when he promoted him to the first team and gave him the opportunity to debut in both La Liga and Champions League when he was only 17 years old.
However, faced with fierce competition from names like Dani Olmo, Gavi or Lamine Yamal, Dro believes that his development path is narrowed. Although Barcelona has prepared a long-term contract until 2031, this midfielder still decided to leave immediately after turning 18 to seek a new challenge in Paris.
Hansi Flick could not hide his bitterness when his students left the team. He believes that many young players today are too greatly affected by the wrong advice of relatives and representatives.
