Overview
Paris St-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur will face each other for the first time in an official match, when the two teams compete for the 2025 European Super Cup.
PSG are present as Champions League champions for the first time in history, after a devastating 5-0 victory over Inter Milan. This is the final match with the largest score difference in the history of the Champions League/Europa League.
This is only the second time a French team has participated in the Super Cup, after PSG lost 2-9 to Juventus in January 1997. If they win, they will help France become the 13th country to own the Super Cup champion team, and the newest country to be crowned since Germany in 2013 ( Bayern Munich).
With the Champions League title and reaching the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 final, PSG is considered the number one candidate. Statistics also support them. 11/12 of the most recent Super Cups have belonged to the Champions League champions, except for Atletico Madrid's 4-2 victory over Real Madrid in 2018.
On the other hand, Tottenham entered a new era with coach Thomas Frank - who left Brentford to replace Ange Postecoglou. The Australian has previously helped Spurs win their first major European title in 41 years.
The Europa League title makes Tottenham the eighth English club to feature in the Super Cup. And of the previous seven teams, only Arsenal (who lost 0-2 to AC Milan in 1995) have not won in their first taste of the competition.
The match at Udine also marked Frank's debut as Spurs coach, making him the first coach to lead an English team to debut in the European Super Cup.
Frank's goal is to improve Tottenham's image after last season, when they lost 16 matches - the most of any team in the Premier League in 2025.
In contrast, PSG have won more games than any other club in Europe's top five leagues this calendar year (34).
One of the keys to the success of the Paris team is the explosive form of Ousmane Dembele. The French striker has been directly involved in 36 goals in all competitions in 2025 (27 goals, 9 assists) - the most of any other player in Europe's top five leagues.
Notably, Dembele has scored (3) or assisted (3) in 6/8 matches against English opponents this year.
Personnel situation
Tottenham will enter the European Super Cup match with a seriously discouraged force when a series of key players are absent due to injury.
James Maddison is the latest name to join the Spurs injured list after suffering an ACL injury in the pre-season friendly against Newcastle.
The English midfielder will be absent alongside Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, Manor Solomon, Bryan Gil and Kota Takai. Tottenham also do not have the service of Yves Bissouma for disciplinary reasons.
On the other side of the front line, PSG have not suffered any more injuries after a shorter pre-season than usual due to having to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
Coach Luis Enrique will have a headache choosing an attacking player for the starting lineup, as all of Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are on the list of 22 players participating in the match.
Expected lineup:
PSG: Lucas Chevalier, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Tottenham Hotspur: Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky Van de Ven, Djed Spence, Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancaur, Mohammed Kudus, Pape Sarr, Brennan Johnson, Richarlison.
Score prediction: PSG 2-1 Tottenham
The match between PSG and Tottenham takes place at 2:00 am on August 14 (Vietnam time).
