Second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo saw Liverpool beat Real Madrid at home, maintaining their five-match winning run in the UEFA Champions League this season. In this match, two of their biggest stars, Mbappe and Salah, both missed penalties.
With Liverpool failing to beat Madrid in their last six meetings, including the 2018 and 2022 Champions League finals, Arne Slot said it was a memorable moment for the home side to overcome their 15-time European champions.
He said: "You know, it's special to play against a team that has won the Champions League so many times. Real Madrid have been a pain for Liverpool for many years. It's a big week, it's nice to experience it.
I think it's always great to win a game, especially a big game like this. Everyone knows Liverpool are up against a team with a lot of quality players.
But given the strange, different context of this season's Champions League, it's hard to judge the importance of past victories. If we meet Real again in the last 16, and beat them, it will be a strong statement from us."
Liverpool are almost certain to reach the last 16, with just three games left in the group stage. But Slot stressed that he is not counting on points. What is important is that the players have met expectations as he hoped.
Liverpool will face Man City in a crucial Premier League match at Anfield on December 1. Slot said it was "too early" to assess the extent of injuries to Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate. In the domestic rankings, Liverpool are 8 points ahead of Man City.
Mbappe lacks confidence
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said Kylian Mbappe is "lacking confidence" after missing a penalty in the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.
Mbappe had a chance to level the scores at 1-1 in the 61st minute - after Alexis Mac Allister had put Liverpool ahead, but his penalty was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.
"Missing penalties happens a lot to strikers. There is a cure, which is patience. It was a difficult moment for Mbappe, especially today, with the missed penalty. Everyone has to support him.
"It's probably a lack of confidence. He's scored a lot of penalties, sometimes he misses them. So he has to keep training, keep playing and that moment will pass."
Mbappe has now scored just two goals in his last nine games for Madrid in all competitions, failing to score in his last four Champions League games.
"For us, he looks good, he trains well, he's confident. Sometimes things go well, sometimes not. Today it wasn't, especially with the penalty, but we trust him. Kylian will definitely do what is expected of him," midfielder Luka Modric told Movistar.
