Coach Shin Tae-yong says goodbye to Indonesian team

The Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) parted ways with coach Shin Tae-yong.

This information was announced by President Erick Thohir at a press conference held in Jakarta today.

"We feel we need a coach who can communicate and execute strategies better with the players. What I do is for the benefit of the national team," the Indonesian football chief said.

It is known that the Head of the Indonesian football delegation, Sumardji, met with coach Shin Tae-yong this morning.

CNN (Indonesia) has an article quoting PSSI president Erick Thohir: "The cooperation between PSSI and coach Shin Tae-yong has ended. We would like to thank Mr. Shin for what he has done up to now.

The relationship between the two sides is very good and we are trying our best for the proposed plans.

Mr. Sumardji met with coach Shin Tae-yong and received a letter from the Korean coach. Of course, there will be a further process regarding our relationship. I thank him for everything.”

According to the previous contract, coach Shin Tae-yong will lead the Indonesian team until 2027. However, PSSI has not given a specific reason for firing this coach.

However, according to Indonesian and Korean media, the reason is likely due to the poor performance of the archipelago team at the 2024 ASEAN Cup.

In the last tournament, Indonesia was in the same group with Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines. They lost 2 matches against Vietnam and the Philippines, drew with Laos and won against Myanmar. With only 4 points, Indonesia was eliminated from the group stage.

Mr. Shin Tae-yong's highlights during his time working in Indonesia were winning the gold medal in men's football at the 32nd SEA Games and defeating Saudi Arabia in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In addition, U23 Indonesia reached the semi-finals of the 2024 U23 Asian Cup under the leadership of this coach.
