Having decided not to spend big in the summer of 2024, Liverpool still have plenty of time to make ends meet under the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Of course, they will only enter the transfer market if a surprise target comes along.
The two positions that the Reds need the most reinforcement at the moment are defensive midfield and left-back. Liverpool were close to signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in the summer, but the player ultimately decided to stay in San Sebastian.
The arrival of Ryan Gravenberch has made Zubimendi's absence from Anfield seem like a blessing in disguise, but Liverpool remain keen on the Spain international and, moreover, they need someone to step up to the plate when the fixtures get busy.
As well as Zubimendi, Andy Robertson's struggles this season mean Liverpool could be looking to strengthen their left-back options. Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez and Wolves' Rayan Ait-Nouri are among the names linked with the Reds.
Meanwhile, it is unlikely that Liverpool will part with any key players in the January transfer window. Coach Arne Slot's team is competing for the championship in many arenas and therefore, needs as many players as possible.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid as his future remains uncertain. The Champions League holders are targeting the England defender following Dani Carvajal's long-term injury. However, Los Blancos may wait until next summer to try to convince Arnold to join the Bernabeu on a free transfer.
Like Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also out of contract at the end of the season. Negotiations with all three players are ongoing and Liverpool are keen to sign new contracts as soon as possible.
Liverpool currently lead the Premier League with 40 points, four ahead of second-placed Chelsea, with a game in hand. The impressive tally is the result of Slot's excellent form, but the Dutchman has warned his players of the challenges ahead, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period.
"Being top at this moment in time means a lot because you always want to be at the top. But we know very well how difficult the Premier League is.
"You have to be at your best in every game and one wrong moment can change everything. This is what makes the Premier League special and we have to be prepared for every game," Slot said after the 6-3 win over Tottenham.
