Arne Slot's side have traveled four points clear of Chelsea with a game in hand after easily beating Tottenham.
2 headers in the first 31 minutes of Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister helped The Kop have a comfortable game. James Maddison narrowed the gap to 4 minutes before the end of the first half. However, Liverpool still managed to re-establish a 2-goal gap with Dominik Szoboszlai's goal in extra time.
In the second half, Slot's side showed no signs of slowing down. Szoboszlai responded with a cross for Salah to tap the ball into the net from close range in the 54th and 61st minutes. With a score of 5-1, the match was almost decided.
Some Spurs fans left even though the match still had about 30 minutes left. However, the "Roosters" suddenly rose up to score 2 consecutive goals thanks to Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke, thereby lighting up the hope of a comeback. However, a clever counter-attack by the visitors extinguished all hopes, when Salah passed the ball to Diaz to score the decisive goal.
"We completely dominated, we played much, much better than them. Today, apart from scoring 6 goals, I think we could have scored even more. It's always like that, you can't score every chance," said the Dutchman after the win over Spurs.
There are many ways to evaluate Liverpool's impressive start under Slot. And the games against Tottenham are one such measure.
Arsenal needed a set-piece to win 1-0 at Tottenham's home ground in September. Manchester City lost 4-0 at home to Spurs and were beaten away from home in the Carabao Cup. Chelsea won 4-3 earlier this month, but they need to come back from behind after falling two goals behind.
Liverpool may have conceded three goals, but they are in a different league to Tottenham. They ended the match with an expected goals (xG) of 4.61, behind only four other away sides in a Premier League game over the past five years: Chelsea against Southampton earlier this month (5.43), Man City against Norwich in February 2022 (5.08), Liverpool against Leeds in September 2021 (4.71) and Man City against Brighton in July 2020 (4.64).
After the Christmas break, Slot's side return to Anfield to welcome Leicester City, while Tottenham visit Nottingham Forest.
"What does it mean to top the group on Christmas Day? Of course, that makes sense because you always prefer to be in your current position rather than another position on the rankings. Winning the Premier League is always difficult. You have to keep going, keep going. The players need to understand that the season only ends in May," Slot added.
