The reason why the £100 million fee in the Premier League is no longer shocking

Contracts over 100 million pounds are no longer an exception, as the Premier League enters an era of spending booms in the transfer market.

The transfer fee for top stars in the Premier League is increasing at an unprecedented rate. In just a few years, deals worth over £100 million have shifted from exceptions to new standards, reflecting the increasingly superior financial strength of the Premier League.

The turning point of this trend is considered to be the deal for Jack Grealish to join Manchester City for £100 million in 2021. After that, a series of blockbuster signings such as Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo or Declan Rice continued to break old milestones, pulling the player price level to an unprecedented high.

According to statistics, the "top players" group is identified as 25% of the most expensive permanent transfer contracts each season in the Premier League. If in the 2016-2023 period, the average fee of this group only fluctuated slightly, then the last 3 years have witnessed a strong acceleration. In the summer of 2026 alone, the average figure increased from £36.6 million to £70.5 million.

This explosion comes from the superior financial potential of Premier League clubs. Huge revenue from television rights, sponsorship and commerce helps even mid-range teams have revenue exceeding many teams that regularly participate in the Champions League in other leagues. This makes them no longer under pressure to sell stars to balance finances, and at the same time have a great advantage at the negotiating table.

The transfer market is also continuously pushed up by blockbuster deals. Liverpool once spent £116.5 million to bring Florian Wirtz to Anfield, before continuing to break records with Alexander Isak worth £125 million. Meanwhile, Elliot Anderson (£116 million), Morgan Rogers (£117 million) and Sandro Tonali (£100 million) also successively created new milestones.

Another factor that helps clubs spend heavily is the payment mechanism. Most blockbuster deals are paid in installments over many fiscal years, helping to reduce pressure on accounting books and in accordance with profit and sustainability (PSR) regulations.

Currently, to reach a fee of over 100 million pounds, players often have to meet many criteria such as being at their peak age (24-26 years old), having proven their class in the Premier League or possessing special potential. Florian Wirtz and Enzo Fernandez are rare exceptions who have not played in the Premier League before creating hundred-million-pound deals.

In the context that Premier League revenue continues to increase and clubs possess abundant financial resources, contracts worth more than 100 million pounds are predicted to appear more and more. What was once considered a "blockbuster of the century" has now become a familiar part of the English football transfer market.
