In the first match of Group B of the Southeast Asian National Football Championship (ASEAN Cup - formerly known as AFF Cup 2024), the Vietnamese team faced the host team Laos. Although rated higher than their opponents, the "Golden Star Warriors" had to wait until the second half to score.
In the 59th minute, Hai Long finished with a classy and beautiful one-touch shot to open the score for Vietnam. Four minutes later, Tien Linh seized the opportunity to score diagonally to help the home team take a 2-0 lead.
In the 69th minute, Quang Hai stole the ball and assisted Van Toan to score, raising the score to 3-0 for the Vietnamese team. Van Vi was the one who accurately scored the fourth goal for the away team.
In the final minutes, the Laos team shortened the score to 1-4 from a penalty kick. This was also the final score of the match between the Vietnam and Laos teams.
In the remaining match of Group B, with a young squad and little experience, the Indonesian team struggled to win 1-0 against Myanmar. The only goal of the away team came from Asnawi.
With this result, Vietnam temporarily took the lead in Group B with the same 3 points as Indonesia but with a better goal difference. Following them are the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos.
In Group A, with a 10-0 victory over Timor Leste in the opening match, Thailand firmly holds the top spot with 3 points and a goal difference of +10. Ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively are Cambodia and Malaysia. In the opening match, these two teams drew 2-2.
Singapore is in fourth place as the Lion Island's representative has yet to compete. Timor Leste is last with a goal difference of -10.
