What crime was Partey charged with?
Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, which shocked English football.
Partey was charged with two counts of rape involving a woman, three counts of rape involving a second woman, and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman.
All of these incidents are believed to have occurred between 2021 and 2022. Partey has denied all allegations against him.
A statement from Partey's lawyer said: "Thomas Partey denied all allegations against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three years of investigation. Currently, he welcomes the opportunity to clear his name."
Why did it take so long to make a claim?
Partey was first arrested on drug trafficking charges three years ago in July 2022. London police have been conducting a full-scale investigation since then.
According to British media, the first report on the case was transferred by the police to the Royal Prosecutor's Office on December 27, 2024 - 18 months after Partey was first arrested.
After further investigation, an updated file of the case was submitted to the CPS in April. Two months later, Partey was charged.
Rape cases are one of the most difficult criminal cases to prosecute. The CPS will only charge if they believe there is a "possible charge" when all the evidence is submitted to the prosecution.
It was only when the CPS reviewed the police evidence against Partey in April that they felt they had enough information to charge him with the alleged crimes.
In general, the process of investigating sex crimes is often long and sensitive.
Why is Arsenal opening negotiations to extend Partey's contract?
British media reported in April this year that Arsenal had begun negotiating with Partey on a new contract.
In May, when asked whether he wanted Partey to continue playing, manager Mikel Arteta replied: "Yes, he is a really important player for us."
In early June, Arsenal confirmed that they were still negotiating with Partey on a new deal.

Arsenal have yet to comment on why they are negotiating an extension with Partey while he is under criminal investigation.
What did Arsenal say after Partey was charged?
An Arsenal spokesperson said: " Partey's contract ended on 30 June. Due to ongoing legal procedures, the club cannot comment on the incident."
The Football Association and the Premier League also declined to comment on this incident.
Police Inspector Andy furphy, who directed the investigation, said: "Our priority remains to support women who have spoken out. We would like to ask anyone affected by this case or anyone with information to discuss with us."
What happened next?
Partey will have to appear in court at the Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 (local time). Perhaps it will not be until 2026 that his case will be brought to trial at a plenary session.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old is still free to continue his playing career. Partey could sign a free transfer if a club wants to sign him.
