In 39 minutes at the Emirates, Toby Collyer left a deep impression on Man United fans. The 21-year-old star not only impressed with his abundant physical strength but also with his ability to cover space when defending against Arsenal in the FA Cup.
With the Red Devils down to 10 men, Ruben Amorim's bold decision to bring Collyer on for Kobbie Mainoo paid off handsomely. Rather than opting for experienced players like Casemiro or Christian Eriksen, the Portuguese coach trusted Collyer's youth and the English midfielder did not disappoint.
Collyer made eight successful defensive moves in the match, half of which came in the home team's penalty area. The 2004-born talent's saves not only helped relieve pressure from Arsenal's attack but also demonstrated his sharpness in reading the game. In addition, Collyer also actively supported full-back Tyrell Malacia by frequently dropping back to the left wing to reinforce the defense.
Collyer’s form has been praised by many, including former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand. On his personal YouTube channel, the Red Devils legend stressed: “Toby Collyer is absolutely brilliant. His energy is beyond expectation, a testament to his relentless hard work.” Captain Bruno Fernandes also sent his junior the following message: “A worthy opportunity. Keep up the good work, kid!”
Toby Collyer has struggled since breaking into the first team at United. Injury sustained on England Under-20 duty last October meant he missed the end of Erik ten Hag's reign and the entirety of caretaker manager Ruud van Nistelrooy's tenure. The 21-year-old made a slower start to life than his team-mates when Ruben Amorim took over.
Collyer has, however, slowly found his groove again. After four appearances in the squad, his performance against Arsenal was a chance to prove himself. He has played just 205 minutes for the first team so far, across four different competitions, including the Community Shield.
Possessing outstanding stamina, good tackling ability and tenacity, Collyer impressed Erik ten Hag in training sessions earlier in 2024. Under Amorim, the switch to a 3-4-3 formation seems to suit the English midfielder’s style of play. The system requires great stamina and the ability to maintain a high level of intensity, something Collyer has proven to be a strength.
However, the 21-year-old still needs to improve his long passing and ball movement, which Amorim is demanding more from his midfielders. If he can perfect this skill, Collyer could become more than just a rotational player, but also a first-team regular.
Collyer's current contract with Man United runs until the summer of 2027, with the option of a further year. The Old Trafford club have no plans to let him leave on loan this month, especially with the form of Casemiro and Eriksen no longer convincing. Although there is still much to learn, Collyer's enthusiasm, enthusiasm and fighting spirit are big pluses in Amorim's eyes.
