Ipswich Town - Man United match overview
The Portuguese was appointed as Erik ten Hag's successor at the start of November, but he did not start work immediately. Instead, Ruud van Nistelrooy spent three games in charge of the Red Devils as caretaker before Amorim took over.
Aged 39 years, 302 days on match day, Amorim will be the youngest manager to take charge of a first-team match for the Red Devils since Wilf McGuinness in August 1969 (31 years, 288 days).
A good omen for the new boss is United's recent record against promoted opponents. The Red Devils have won 17 and drawn two of their last 19 games against newly promoted sides.
Their last defeat was a 2-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021. Furthermore, Man United have won nine consecutive away games against promoted teams. Only Chelsea have a better record, winning 21 away games against promoted teams between October 2002 and November 2008.
Several players in the Man United squad will be keen to impress the new manager, with Alejandro Garnacho certainly among them. The Argentine has 20 Premier League goal contributions (13 goals, 7 assists), making him only the second non-British player to reach that mark for Man United before the age of 21. Only Ronaldo has managed that (14 goals, 11 assists).
Ipswich may be the underdogs in this game, but Kieran McKenna was previously assistant manager at Old Trafford for five years. Before the international break, Ipswich picked up their first win of the season, beating Tottenham 2-1 last time out. According to Opta, Ipswich have not won back-to-back Premier League games since February 2002.
However, they are yet to win at home this season after playing five games at Portman Road. Previously, five newly promoted teams failed to win their first six home games in the competition and were relegated: Swindon Town in 1993-94, Crystal Palace in 1997-98, Norwich City in 2004-05, Sunderland in 2005-06 and Burnley in 2023-24.
Ipswich have some pretty poor attacking stats. They rank lowest in the Premier League this season for shots (108), shots on target (33), touches in the opposition box (199) and expected goals (10.2).
Indeed, things could be even worse for Ipswich were it not for the form of Liam Delap, who has scored six of Ipswich's 12 Premier League goals this season. He is one of three players to have contributed to at least half of their Premier League goals in the 2024-25 campaign so far, along with Manchester City ace Erling Haaland (55% - 12/22) and in-form Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood (53% - 8/15).
Head to head record Ipswich - Man United
Ipswich have lost four of their previous five Premier League games against Man United, drawing one and failing to score in those defeats.
However, it is worth noting that there has not been a Premier League meeting between these two sides since April 2002.
Man United won 1-0 at Portman Road in 2002. In fact, the Red Devils have not won back-to-back games against their opponents at Portman Road since the 1962-63 season. Hopefully Ruben Amorim can help the Devils repeat that feat.
The Ipswich - Man United match will take place at 23:30 on November 24.
