Vietnam Women's Team and the match bracket problem at the 2026 Asian Cup

MINH PHONG |

The ranking after the group stage may determine the level of competition for a ticket to the 2027 World Cup for the Vietnamese women's team.

The 2026 Asian Cup is of special significance to the Vietnamese women's team because this is a tournament to compete for a spot in the 2027 World Cup of the Asian region. In the context that the AFC maintains the 6-ticket direct mechanism, the bracket structure from the quarter-finals onwards makes the ranking after the group stage directly affect the probability of going further.

Group C of the Vietnamese women's team includes India, Taiwan (China) and Japan. Looking at the professional and force balance in recent years, Japan almost has an advantage for the top spot in the group. This puts Vietnam in competition for second place in the group or at least a spot in the group of third-placed teams with the best results.

However, it is at this point that a complex problem appears. According to the format, the 4 teams in the semi-finals will win a World Cup ticket. The 4 teams that lose in the quarter-finals will not be eliminated immediately but will continue to play internal play-offs to choose 2 more direct spots.

The problem lies in the pairing between the quarter-final losing teams.

If Vietnam finishes the group stage in second place in Group C, the scenario is to face the top team in Group B in the quarterfinals - where strong candidates such as China or North Korea may appear. These are teams with superior physical strength, speed and top-level competition experience. The ability to create surprises is not non-existent, but the probability is clearly lower.

Assuming Vietnam does not pass the quarter-finals in this bracket, the opponent in the next ticket match is likely to be the loser of the remaining quarter-final pair - gathering other strong teams such as South Korea or Australia. Just having to overcome two of the names mentioned above is already a very big challenge for Huynh Nhu and her teammates.

Conversely, if Vietnam advances as one of the third-placed teams with good results, the team will fall into another quarter-final bracket. In case of stopping in the quarter-finals, the opponent in the play-off match is likely to be the remaining third-placed team, a group that may include representatives such as the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Iran or Bangladesh.

These are opponents with a not too large level gap compared to Vietnam. In terms of probability, the path to winning tickets is therefore more feasible.

However, the option of finishing 3rd is not simple. Third-placed teams must compare points, goal difference and many sub-indices between groups. Just one goal conceded or an unexpected draw can also cause the team to be eliminated early. At that time, all calculations about the bracket will become meaningless.

In a major tournament like the 2026 Asian Cup, the story of analyzing brackets is not too strange. However, all strategies only have value when the team is capable enough on the field. The Vietnamese women's team still needs to ensure professional foundation, especially defensive ability against strong teams and efficiency in finishing against equal opponents.

The challenging journey is ahead for coach Mai Duc Chung and his team. The ultimate goal is to maximize opportunities and compete for a ticket to participate in the 2027 World Cup.
