Many Iranian state media confirmed that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has passed away, including Tasnim and Fars news agencies.
State television IRIB reported on the morning of March 1: "The Supreme Leader of Iran has died for martyrdom".
Fars news agency has revealed more details about the death of Iran's supreme leader. The report said that Mr. Khamenei was assassinated at his office in the early morning of February 28 while "performing his assigned duties".
Fars news agency reported that the Iranian government has declared 40 days of national mourning after the assassination of Khamenei. The government also announced 7 holidays.
This information was released after the US and Israel said that Mr. Khamenei had been killed after a series of joint attacks by the US and Israel on the country.
There is a process in the Iranian constitution in case the supreme leader passes away. According to that process, there will be a council of 3 people, including the Iranian president, the head of the judiciary and a clergyman from the Guardian Council, who hold power to run the country.
Al Jazeera sources said that there is information about the possibility of granting power to Secretary of the National Security Council Ali Larijani.
President Donald Trump said on February 28 that there are "some bright candidates" to lead Iran after he announced the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
When asked by CBS News in a phone interview about this person, Mr. Trump said: "I know exactly who it is, but I can't tell you.
When asked further whether there was anyone in Iran he wanted to see take on a leadership role, the US President said: "Yes, I think so. There are some bright candidates".
