Dr. Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist at Shareefa Skin Care Clinic (India) - said that rosemary essential oil is a familiar and commonly used essential oil.
It has many culinary and cosmetic benefits and is also good for health not only physically but also mentally.
Because of the wonderful uses of rosemary essential oil, this product is easily mixed or counterfeited.
According to Dr. Shareefa Chause, detecting fake rosemary oil is not easy, especially when the market is flooded with synthetic rosemary oil of chemical origin.
One of the most basic ways to detect fake rosemary oil, as pointed out by Dr. Shareefa Chause, is to drop a few drops of oil into water.
If the oil floats while forming droplets then the rosemary oil is genuine. But if the oil quickly dissolves then the oil has been made with some chemicals or other synthetic substances.
Besides, you can also check the color and density of rosemary essential oil carefully. Because, pure rosemary essential oil must be thin and liquid. If it is too thick, there is a high possibility that the product has been mixed with other ingredients.
“Avoid buying rosemary essential oil that is darker in color and opt for a light yellow essential oil. Look for brands that claim their rosemary essential oil is 100% pure, made from pure ingredients while still maintaining quality,” suggests Dr. Chause.
Meanwhile, Dr Haricharan G, internal medicine physician, Gleneagles Hospital, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad (India) – added that pure rosemary essential oil will have a strong, woody and herbal scent. If the scent is too strong or has a chemical smell, it could be a sign of a fake.
In particular, pure rosemary essential oil will not be greasy. If you feel that the essential oil is greasy when applied to your hands or takes a long time to absorb into your skin, your essential oil may have been mixed with a carrier oil or synthetic substance.
Or you can test by placing a drop of rosemary essential oil on a piece of paper. Pure rosemary oil will evaporate without leaving any oily residue. If there is a residue left, it may have been mixed with a carrier oil.
Dermatologists recommend that pure essential oils are usually stored in dark glass bottles to avoid light because light can degrade the quality of essential oils. Therefore, real essential oils will usually not be stored in plastic or clear bottles.
Rosemary essential oils generally have a long shelf life, but their quality may decrease over time. It is important to always check the expiration date on the packaging before using them, as expired rosemary essential oils can cause some allergic reactions such as inflammation, itching, and redness.
